TRAILERS OF THE WEEK: F9:The Fast Saga & Army of The Dead!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

WEEK 4 of Worlds Best Media’s SPRING 2021 Movie & TV Preview begins with this installment of TRAILERS OF THE WEEK! We have the sick new trailers for F9: The Fast & Furious Saga, with the talented Justin Lin returning to direct, and Army of The Dead, directed by Zack Snyder! Let’s start with Army of The Dead starring Dave Bautista. Now, I know what some of you are thinking, probably that you’re a little sick of Zack Snyder after so much coverage of his Justice League film last month. However, I LOVE zombie movies, Snyder directed one of the best zombie movies of all time with Dawn of The Dead, and this trailer looks fucking sick! Take a look below…

Army of The Dead premieres on Netflix and Select Theaters 5/21/21

Next up, we have F9: The Fast Saga or The Fast and The Furious 9 or who gives a shit? We all now why we show up for this absurdly entertaining series of films. Out of the 2 trailers we’re highlighting this week, the one with zombies is the MUCH MORE realistic of the two. After a year long delay due to COVID, F9: The Fast Saga finally hits theaters this June. I make no apologies, I fucking LOVE these movies and you can’t bet your ass that this is one of my MUST WATCH movies this summer!

F9: The Fast Saga hit theaters 6/25/21

Captain America’s Legacy in the MCU

This article contains minor spoilers Episode 2 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

Last week, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premiered and we got our first glimpse of, what seemed to be the new government sponsored Cap. So, I went to Google. I wanted to know who he was, and what was the deal with him. Who is this guy? and What

One thing that was clear right away from the context of the episode: this New Captain America is going to be a big issue for Sam and Bucky. But is he supposed to be a good guy or a bad guy? Or something else entirely?

Is John Walker a Villain, a Pawn, or The Real Deal?

Based on what I learned about the character from the comics, there have been multiple attempts recreate Captain America over the years. The secret to the super soldier serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America, died with Dr. Erskine. Imperfect versions of the formula had been tested on more people than the public (and probably Steve) ever knew. Something we learn more about later in this episode. Characters like Nuke, who appeared in Season 1 of Jessica Jones, Weapon X aka Wolverine, and even The Hulk were all created in an attempt to make the next Captain America. The new Captain America on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, John Walker was another fill in for Steven Rogers who went by US Agent. He’s been both a villain and an anti-hero. So, I was kind of under that impression he’s going to be a villain. What surprised me was that I didn’t think he was a particularly likable character. You would think a big bad would more of an attempt to hide his smug arrogance.

His nice guy routipetoo paper this. Sam and Bucky certainly don’t trust him, seeing Walker with that shield is a slap in the face to Bucky and Sam. I was suspicious from the start to be fair the opening scenes of the episode go along way to humanizing the character. To me, the cracks in Walker’s facade are already showing.

If He’s a Good Guy…

On the other hand, the series could be trying to subvert audience expectations. Sam and Bucky, along with the viewers, don’t trust Walker and even find his very existence to be an insult to the legacy of their friend. Walker could surprise us by realizing he’s in over his head and return the shield, and the legacy that comes with it, back to Sam. But don’t hold your breath.

John Walker & The Shadow of Steve Rogers

Steve Rogers is and always will be synonymous with Captain America. In the comics, Bucky and Sam have both taken up Cap’s mantle. Walker never earned the role. It was handed to him by the the government. Steve didn’t serve a country or government, he fought for the dream of what America can be at its best. Which led to some serious conflicts between Steve and the U.S. government in both The MCU and the comics. So it makes a lot of sense that the U.S. would want a Captain America they could completely control. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something much darker in John Walker’s past that hasn’t been revealed to the audience yet. I’d even go so far as to say that some of his backstory that told to us in Episode 2, had been at least partially fabricated for propaganda purposes.

When Will Sam Reclaim The SHIELD?

The heart of this series is Sam Wilson’s journey to accept Steve’s choice and become the true Captain America. More broadly, it’s about America and it’s complicated history with race. Captain America is the personification of the country, so what better way to explore those themes than to tell a story about a black Captain America? We’re already seeing how race politics are playing out in the show. By choosing John Walker instead of Sam, a statement has been made that the government is unwilling to pick a black Captain America. A, sadly, unsurprising move.

Sam is an Avenger, after coming back from the blip and saving the world only to be treated with the same discrimination that people of color deal with every day. When Sam and Bucky are in Baltimore in Episode 2, when the police arrive and their subsequent treatment of Sam was an all too familiar scene. Had the cops not realized that they were talking to 2 Avengers, that scene could have played in very different and horrifying way.

If and when Sam becomes Captain America within The MCU, he’ll face an uphill battle that Steve or Bucky wouldn’t because of bigots and racists in the public, politics and big business who won’t accept a black Captain America. During his time as Captain America in the comics they would even touch on everyday acts of racism, like negative social media reactions with #NotMyCaptainAmerica trending on social media. That’s one of the reasons Sam makes a very compelling Captain America in the comic book and he’ll make a compelling Cap in The MCU. Questions about race and class were baked in to the story when Sam was Captain America. It’s one of the reasons he’s so interesting in that role, because the writers could touch on real world issues that exist around us every day, in a way they couldn’t when Steve or Bucky were Captain America.

Marvel did a good job of showing that Steve was a product of his time and his war. That same opportunity is there when telling a story about Sam Wilson. With only two episodes so far, this series has touched upon some incredibly deep and fascinating issues and beings only promised to get more interesting as the season progresses.

While promoting the film, Zack Snyder offered up a lot of interesting information, teases, and images about what might have been, had things gone according to plan and the DCEU stayed on the track that began with Man of Steel. Snyder originally envisioned a 5-film “Lord of The Rings” style epic, that included Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and culminated in a massive Justice League trilogy. As a result there were a lot ideas and concepts that were played around with that were abandoned. A good example of how somethings could’ve played out slightly differently is, how in one of the subplots in Batman V Superman, involved Wonder Woman attempting to retrieve an old photograph of herself and her comrades-in-arms from WWI. This of course tied into 2017’s Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins. However, before the story for the first wonder woman film had been finalized there was still some to be about exactly how long Diana had been away from Themyscira fighting wars in “Man’s World”. Some beautiful images were commissioned showing Diana fighting alongside soldiers in wars much farther back in history, closer to The Crimean War than World War I. Snyder shared a few of them online that I thought were particularly interesting which you can take a look at right here:

Snyder offered up another sneak peek at The Snyder Cut, whe he confirmed the long running fan theory that General Swanwick played by Harry Lennox (Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) was actually J’onn J’onnz: The Martian Manhunter, hiding among mankind. Snyder revealed that the character would indeed be making an appearance in his Justice League when it premiered on HBO Max, with Lennox returning for the role. DC helped Snyder give fans at hint at the character’s design in the film, by publishing variant covers of the JL comic book a few months back, featuring the movie version of this classic character drawn by the legendary Jim Lee. Take a look…

This is the final design for the character used in the movie

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK: Army of The Dead & Justice Society: World War II !

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Picks For Trailers of The Week

2021 stands to be a big year for Netflix and Zack Snyder. The director is getting a mulligan from DC fans everywhere with Zack Snyder‘s Justice League premiering on HBO Max in March. In May, Snyder teams up with Netflix for his other big project this year, a zombie-heist flick, Army Of The Dead, starring Dave Bautista. Here’s the official synopsis:

After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.

Now, we have our first look at Army of the Dead with the new trailer below. I was sold on this movie before I even saw the trailer, to be honest. Zack Snyder directed 2004’s Dawn of The Dead, which is not only one of the best zombie movies ever made. It’s also one of the only remakes of a classic movies that lives up to and possibly even surpasses the original.  So a new movie called Army of The Dead, from the director of Dawn of The Dead, about a team of mercenaries, led by Dave Bautista, trying to rob a casino in a zombie infested Las Vegas? In the immortal words of Kevin Smith: “Fuck you. Take my money!” I am in!

Justice Society: World War II – Clip & Trailer

DC Animation has really upped their game over year and a half. Coming off of a run of strong animated films like Superman: Red Son, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, and Batman: Soul of The Dragon, DC Animation has been doing their nest work in years. After coming off a series of winners, their next film, Justice Society: World War II, looks fucking awesome. It’s great because it’s a period accurate piece. When the JSA was first introduced, they were fighting Nazi’s during WWII. I think it’ll be great for fans to see the JSA (Justice Society of America) and members like The “Jay Garrick” Flash and Green “Alan Scott” Lantern, who would go on to inspire the modern incarnations, in their prime. DC Animation has also begun to move away from that in house, stock animation style of the previous, shared DC Animated Movie Universe. So the animation in this new movie stands out in a beautifully bold and dynamic way. The full trailer for Justice Society: World War II has already been released (which we posted below, if you haven’t seen it yet), but a new clip from the movie dropped this weekend, showing Wonder Woman in battle with a platoon of Nazi soldiers and it looks incredible! Take a look:

Justice Society: World War II (Full Trailer):

Justice Society: World War II is available digitally on 4/27 and on Blu-Ray/4K on 5/11

TRAILER: Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

In just a few weeks fans will finally get to see (for better or worse) Justice League as director Zack Snyder envisioned it. The film, clocking in at over a 4 hour running time, premieres on HBO Max on March 18th. Zack Snyder is a pretty divisive filmmaker, but I love Man of Steel and as far as I’m concerned, if you take Jessie Eisenberg’s god awful take on Lex Luthor out of the film, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Extended Edition is a great fucking movie. I know some of you will think I’m crazy, but I can’t wait to watch Zack Snyder’s Justice League! Take a look at the new trailer below:

What I Want to See: Cinemas in a Post Pandemic World

I love going to the movies. It’s more than just wanting to see new movies, and wanting to see them as soon as possible, but I genuinely love going into a theater getting snacks and a drink and sitting there. I love the trailers, and the feature. I love it all.

I miss going to the movies, it is the one ‘activity’ that’s not super social that I miss. Before the pandemic, my son was almost four and he had finally learned how to behave at a movie theater, and in the first three months of 2020, we saw six movies together. It was amazing, and I foolishly thought it would continue that way until he went off to college.

I’ve heard a lot of people speculating that the movie theaters are going to die off in this pandemic, and I can’t help but hope that everyone is wrong. So, I have come up with a plan, something that I think will help theaters to remain in business through the pandemic.

Bond-style Gift Cards

You’re about to learn how little I know about bonds, and I realize that this is really only the most surface level similarity, but I think gift cards that grow in value is the fix that could save at least the big chains.

So here’s my exact proposal, and obviously the theaters can adjust these numbers as they see fit. Theater’s like AMC, should sell gift cards, we’ll use $20 as an example to show how it will work. You go to AMC (or whatever chain is your favorite) and buy a $20 gift card, but it cannot be used for a year, at which point it will have a value of $25, or you buy a 2 year gift card, and when you finally use it, it’s worth $30.

The average person who might go “oh you know what, the new Fast and Furious is out tomorrow, let’s go see it” might not buy into these kinds of cards, but movie goers who were seeing 6+ movies a year, might—I know I would, and if I were a gambling man, I know at least half a dozen friends who would too.

Would It Work?

I am not deluded enough to think that this would solve the problem outright. Theaters would still hurt, there’s a good chance that depending on the markets they’re in, some will still close, but it might be a life-support measure that could keep them from going under completely.

If there are less theaters, I think that this helps as well. Say you’re in a rural town, and there’s an AMC theater 10 minutes from your house, and you buy a $20 gift card, and then that theater closes and you’re driving 20-30 minutes to a more populated area with an AMC that stays open, you’re getting $25 (or $30) to offset that drive difference.

Please Don’t Let Movie Theaters Die!

I get that for so many people this isn’t a priority, and that when actual people are dying, it probably seems like a problem that doesn’t need to be addressed, but I really think this is the kind of problem that if movie theater owners, and execs work to solve, doesn’t in anyway take away from the humanitarian, and medical solutions, and relief that are so badly needed.

For me, the movie theater is just such a special experience, when other people have been complaining that they haven’t been able to go to a sports game, or do their thing that they enjoy doing, my thing has been the movies. My entire adult life, I’ve been aware of the fact speculation and pressure that are making movie theaters more and more obsolete, and while the theaters have never really fixed the problem, they’ve at least consistently come up with ways to push it back further, and further. Please do that through this crisis too.

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK: Godzilla Vs Kong! Superman & Lois!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK is back! My favorite trailers this week are two projects that could not be more different, but they both look cool as hell! We have an awesome trailer for an upcoming movie and and great trailer for a new TV series. Let’s dive in!

Continuing The Monsterverse Series: Godzilla Vs Kong

First up, we have Godzilla Vs Kong! I think the “Monster-Verse”, which includes Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of The Monsters, and the upcoming Godzilla Vs. Kong, is one of the only attempts at a cinematic universe, outside of The MCU that actually works. After the massive success of the MCU, every movie studio in Hollywood wanted to get their own connected universe of films up and running, with very few achieving any kind of success. In 2017, Universal attempted to get a series of interconnected movies off the ground with Tom Cruise headlining their reboot of The Mummy, which even featured Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The Mummy would have been the first in a series of films referred to as the Dark Universe, focusing on Universal’s line up of Classic Monster, including the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and Dracula among others. Stars like Javier Bardem, Angelina Jolie, and Johnny Depp had all signed on to take up roles as the various monsters. After 2017’s The Mummy was a critical and commercial failure, Universal scrapped plans their plans for the Dark Universe. Even Marvel’s main competition, DC/Warner Bros, has struggled with their DCEU or The Worlds of DC (or whatever the hell else they’re calling it). While I‘ve personally enjoyed most of their films, with Justice League being there only out right terrible movie in my opinion, the studio’s only true home run has been the first Wonder Woman. I love Man of Steel and BvS, and quite liked WW84 film, but DC/Warner Bros have yet to recapture the magic of Patty Jenkin’s 2017 Wonder Woman. They do have some pride in some promising projects coming down the pipe, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Anyway, this is all just a really long winded way of saying that these monster verse films yes Have quietly slipped under the radar developing a fan base and a catalog of solid movies. Another bonus as far as I’m concerned, is that the movie has been bumped up to March and will simultaneously be available to watch in the theaters and on HBO Max. Along with the trailer, a new poster for Godzilla Vs. Kong, which I have posted above was dropped looks pretty damn cool. Check out the new trailer right here:

New Series From The Arrowverse: Superman & Lois

The second trailer that I wanted to highlight this week is our best look yet at the upcoming Superman and Lois series on The CW. The latest in TV series to join The CW‘s Arrowverse, the show seems to be telling a Superman story that’s very different from what we’ve seen before. I’ve been a huge fan of Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman since he first debuted in the Season 2 premiere of Supergirl. It’s been great to see how they’ve chosen to include his character more and more in crossovers and frequent guest appearances. Elizabeth Tulloch has been equally strong as Lois Lane. It’s unlikely the series will significantly include Jon Cryer’s PHENOMENAL Lex Luthor because he’s already been used so much on Supergirl. Which is a shame because we’ve never seen a great Superman going up against a great Lex Luthor in any live action project. Surprisingly Jon Cryer has made for a fucking incredible Lex Luthor when he debuted in Season 4 of Supergirl (the best season of the series due in no small part to Cryer). His character worked so well that he went on to be a major player in the biggest and most ambitious Arrowverse crossover, Crisis On Infinite Earths. By far the best and most comic book accurate, live-action version of the character. Regardless I am really looking forward to this new show. I really love the idea of Clark and Lois at a point in their life where they’re having to juggle being a world famous reporters, parents to two teenage boys, and all the insanity that comes with being a superhero family. This new trailer in particular, is much more cinematic and stylish than I expected from this series. I hope this isn’t one of those situations where the show put all their money into the pilot episode, just so it would look cool enough to garner a larger audience, only to have the quality of the special effects and production value drop in subsequent episodes. On the other hand, as both Arrow and The Flash showed us, if there’s one thing The Arrowverse does well, it’s incredible action sequences and impressive CGI on a television budget.

Unfortunately, as long time fan, it seems like The Arrowverse’s best days are behind it and with Arrow gone the remaining shows just aren’t what they used to be. At one point The Arrowverse was one of my favorite things in the world. It would almost got me excited as Game of Thrones or The MCU! (I’m not comparing The Arrowverse to The MCU or GoT in quality at all, I’m talking about the amount of fun and sheer joy that The Arrowverse used to bring me) The Arrowverse is definitely at a crossroads. Now that Arrow has come to an end, The Flash is the flagship show of it’s universe. Sadly, after 3 seasons of what was once the most thrilling, live-action superhero project in any medium, The Flash has been in a downward spiral that it never recovered from. The series is now a shadow of its former self. With the exception of Arrow, the only other Arrowverse show that has consistently continued to be a blast, has been Legends of Tomorrow. Maybe as long as Legends continues to do it’s thing and this exciting new Superman & Lois series delivers, perhaps The Arrowverse will get its second wind. The two hour series premiere will air on The CW on the February. Check out the new trailer for Superman & Lois right here:
