Podcast: BEST & WORST OF 2018 EXTRAVAGANZA!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

cbf9ab6f-6e7f-4e9d-98d4-320b5302b776

2018 is at an end and that means it’s time for the return of one of my favorite episodes of The World’s Best Podcast: The Best & The Worst of 2018! We cover the very best and

the human diarrhea in story form, from TV, Movies Comics and I’ll kinds of other cool shit! This was by far one of my favorite podcasts that we recorded this year and I think you’re all going to love it!

I recorded this episode of The World’s Best Podcast with one my absolute favorite co-host, Ryan McDonald! Of course what look back at the best and worst of 2018 be without a very special appearance by Paul Sr! So sit back and enjoy as we deep dive into everything from Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and Mission: Impossible Fallout to Daredevil, The DC Superhero Crossovers Elseworlds, and more!

*Editors Note- We did have a very minor editing glitch for about 2 seconds towards the last quarter of the episode. You could easily miss it because of who quick and minor it is, but I wanted to give you all a heads up regardless. Even with the issue it still think this is a great episode and I’m very proud of it!

PODCAST: Aquaman Review (SPOILERS)!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

4CB0021F-4FDB-4AF1-88A1-0CDEBEE27A8C

Aquaman is the latest entry in the DCEU or “The Worlds of DC” as it’s officially called… but FUCK THAT! They’re stuck with the DCEU as far as I’m concerned! Name your own movie universe or someone else will do it for you, dammit!  You don’t get to, all of us sudden, finally give a name to already struggling, shitty Movie Universe after it’s been in existence for five goddamn years! (Ok… deep breat… rant over.)

52696E2E-24A7-4C6D-91B7-C6CB821B2151

My father (though I’m still holding out hope that my biological father is the mailman) Paul Sr. and I just came out of the new AQUAMAN film and decided to have a little discussion about it. We do go into some SPOILER territory, so BEWARE.

6A84D823-AF01-453B-B573-DCDBA5DD220E   With movies like this, we usually do a deep dive spoiler filled review, covering the entire film from beginning to end,  analyzing the story, as well as  the characters. This time was a little different, because we basically just sat around and had a conversation about the film. What we liked, what we didn’t like, our thoughts and the characters and the action sequences, etc.

B9378D86-5C1F-4017-9191-47AE3BEE42221A03354B-9182-40B7-AADA-92DC0F638987So, while we do discuss some spoilers, there aren’t nearly as many as other episodes of The World’s Best Podcast. We discuss Jason Mamoa in the title roll, Amber Heard as Mera, the villains: King Orm AKA Ocean Master & Black Manta, as well as where the films falls in quality among the other DCEU films. PODCAST: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Review! (Some SPOILERS)

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

6DFAE82E-78AB-48AA-B22E-7F306878CB50

SpiderMan: Into The SpiderVerse has come along and done what so many people didn’t think was possible, the film yet again reinvents the superhero genre. For the past several years, a number of people in the industry, including individuals like Stephen Spielberg, called the comic book or superhero movie phenomena “a bubble” that will eventually burst like the Western, for example. They argued it’s a genre that will eventually no longer be relevant.

44D1AB65-C5D1-4628-9E73-7C2A81BB7A18

In my opinion, there are major flaws in this kind of thinking. First of all, the terms “comic book” and “superhero” are incorrectly, interchangeable used. Comic Books aren’t a genre, they’re a medium. Just like film, television, or prose literature. While superheroes are certainly the most recognizable type of comic book storytelling by far, comics tell a vast array of stories in dozens of different genres. Comic books and Graphic Novels tell hard boiled mysteries, fantasy sagas, countless sub-genres of science-fiction, coming-of-age romance stories, World War II memoirs, and many others. Comic books, like film and prose tell incredible tales in every genre. So, my point is, to say that there is some kind of “bubble” that will eventually burst, not only misunderstands the current business landscape in Hollywood, it also fundamentally misunderstands what comic books and superheroes stories are.

What’s so brilliant, what’s so genius about Into The SpiderVerse is that it is a superhero film that truly reinvents the genre. Just when the critics thought there was no longer anything unique, compelling, or wildly original to find in a superhero film, here comes SpiderMan: Into The SpiderVerse. Without a doubt the biggest thrill ride you will have at the movies all year.

647EA5A9-AA41-47AC-AF6D-68C247519700

I know these are very bold statements, especially coming from me. After all, this is the same year that saw the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which is certainly up there vying for the top spot of my favorite MCU film. However, I feel to compare Infinity War and  Into The SpiderVerse is missing the point. These are very different movies, trying to do very different things for their audience. What’s so wonderful is that we can get two completely different superhero epics that are both game changers for the genre. They’re both brilliant pieces of entertainment, yet they’re nothing alike. I feel wonderfully grateful that in addition to several of the other very good superhero movies we saw this year, we get two genre redefining superhero film masterpieces that don’t feel like more of the same.

DA8887F1-54A5-4D11-972A-C59511DDA57B

Now, onto the podcast!

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally here to give my two cents on the terrifying, the terrible, the AMAAAAAAZING SPIDERMAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE!!!!! Even though it’s been out for a hot minuet, I still wanted to do an in-depth recap and review of what may be one of the best superhero movies ever made. Period. That’s some pretty high praise. There are SOME spoilers here, so proceed with caution, but this is NOT a full SPOILER-FILLED extravaganza. Also, I take some time to discuss the recent Arrowverse Crossover, Elseworlds! How does it rank among the other crossovers? Where is the Arrowverse heading from here? All this and more! Enjoy! Listen here or subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes:

PODCAST: The Kevin Smith Episode (Part-2)!

Hey Everybody,

Paul here…

Guest co-host Mike Cole returns to The World’s Best Podcast to finish Part 2 of our discussion of the work of filmmaker Kevin Smith! The best part is, we actually talk about Kevin Smith in this episode! As opposed to the last episode where we just bullshitted for most of the show. But it was fun! In this episode Mike and I cover Kevin Smiths’ comic book work on books like Daredevil and Green Arrow! As well as, his work on the screenplay for the never made Tim Burton Superman film ( concept art below ), our favorite lines from his films, his podcast work, and upcoming work Smith currently has in the pipe! We had a blast recording this episode, so please enjoy! Listen here or subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes:

PODCAST: A Kevin Smith Episode! (But We End Up Mostly Telling Funny Stories Instead)

Hey Everybody!

Paul here…

9FA742E8-1D3D-470F-9367-A76EF0BB9281

At long last, Special guest co-host Mike Cole returns to The World’s Best Podcast! He and I set out to discuss the work of filmmaker Kevin Smith. His movies, his comics, his podcasts, his whole career. The highs and the lows. Buuuuut… when you get a couple of old friends together and the crazy, absurd stories start flying, it’s easy for everything to go of the rails. Boy, did it! In the best possible way. This is a 2-Part Episode so we still have plenty of Kevin Smith analysis coming your way. But in this podcast, enjoy some ridiculous, profane, and hopefully pretty damn funny stories! We did manage to get just a little bit of Kevin Smith discussion here or there, though.

(His weight loss transformation has been incredible. He’s the last guy I’d expect to make a change like this. Yes, the heart attack was a huge factor, but he’d already lost a lot of weight at least a year or two before the incident. I think it’s very inspirational)

We had a lot of fun recording this one and I hope it shows in the episode. On a technical note, Mike and I recorded this in different states, so just once or twice in the show his voice is a little lower than mine, but you can still hear him loud and clear. For now please enjoy this hilarious episode about love, life, high school, mental illness, and of course, penises. Listen here or subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes:

Check out the scene below from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, probably one of my favorite scenes in any Kevin Smith flick (or any flick for that matter). From Jay’s incredulous, pitch perfect “What The Fuck Is The Internet?!” to Affleck reading the comments section, it’s all gold.
