PODCAST: Paul Guest Stars on Cuff’s Basement!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

I recently appeared as a guest on the hit podcast Cuff’s Basement, hosted by longtime friends and contributors to World’s Best Media, Tim Cuff and Ryan McDonald! It’s a hell of a lot of fun, so we decided to include it here for your listening pleasure. On this episode of Cuff’s Basement, we discuss one of the best TV shows of all time, HBO’s The Wire. This was a 4-Part series of episodes that Tim and Ryan we’re recording. Each part had a special guest possessing both encyclopedic knowledge and love of HBO’s The Wire. I was the fourth and final guest, so as the old saying goes: Save the best for last! In all seriousness though, all four installments are very entertaining and thought provoking, so if you enjoy this episode I highly recommend listening to the first 3-Parts of,Cuff’s Basement Presents: The Wire – A Podcast Analysis In 4-Parts! If you happen to be a fan of The Wire, then this is a MUST LISTEN! (Cuff’s Basement is available on iTunes/Apple Podcasts)

For those of you that may not know, The Wire was a series that ran on HBO for five seasons in the early 2000s. This amazing show was equal parts comedy and tragedy. Taking place in Baltimore with a stellar ensemble cast, the show began as an exploration of the Baltimore drug trade. Specially focusing on The Barksdale Organization, the most successful and power drug traffickers in the city and the police unit trying to take this criminal organization down. Unfortunately, higher ups in the department only cared about statistics and arrest numbers. The heads of the department only wanted crime statistics that reflected favorably on them, even though the numbers were not an accurate representation of crime in the city of Baltimore. For political reasons, the bosses in The BPD didn’t want to commit time, money, and manpower to the type of long term investigations that would ultimately yield an actual drop of crime and violence in the city. Yet through a combination of intelligence, subterfuge, determination, and out right luck, this group of officers managed to effectively mount a serious investigation into The Barksdale Organization, without the help or even sometimes permission, of the higher ups in the Police Department.

While the Baltimore drug trade and the Baltimore police department would continue to be a major part of the show throughout its entire run, the series was really a deep examination of a broken American city and how all our major institutions like political representatives, The Police Department, school systems, and the media, ultimately fail the people they’re supposed to serve. Those who attempt to enact real change and reform are ultimately destroyed by the systemic corruption of these broken institutions. The creators of the show once referred to The Wire as a Greek tragedy. The parallel being that, in those stories, nothing good ever comes from mortals mixing themselves up with the gods. In The Wire the gods are the institutions, like City Hall or the public school system for example, and the mortals are the citizens and well-meaning individuals working within those systems. The show was like a mesmerizing novel and it was one of the first series to showcase what the television medium was capable of. Along side The Sopranos, The Wire was a huge part of ushering in the golden age of television that we are experiencing now.

I wanted to include this video, featuring some of the best moments of one of the most iconic characters from The Wire, stick up artist and urban Robin Hood, Omar Little.

PODCAST: Lovecraft Country: Series Premiere Review!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

This week on The World’s Best Podcast, I review the premiere episode of HBO’s excellent new horror/drama series: Lovecraft Country. The new series, based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams.

It’s a story of Lovecraftian horror set in the backdrop of Jim Crow America, focusing on one an African-American family from the south side of Chicago. When the novel came out in 2016 it was my favorite book of the year and this new series looks to be an excellent adaptation! Lovecraft Country air Sunday nights on HBO at 9pm EST.

PODCAST: Interview with Mark Fitzgerald – Location Manager On The Town, Mystic River, & Much More!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here….

On this episode of The World’s Best Podcast, I sat down for an interview with Film Location Manager, Mark Fitzgerald. Mark has become synonymous with Boston filmmaking. You may not immediately recognize his name, but he’s left his mark on The City of Boston’s portrayal in movies like few people have. As Location Manager for dozens of films over the last two decades and beyond, he’s worked on movies all over the country, as well as some of Boston’s most iconic films. In our far reaching interview, we discuss how through his work with legendary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, David Mamet, and Ben Affleck, Mark has reshaped how this unique city has been brought to life on film. All this and much more, in this incredibly fascinating interview covering Mark’s prolific career in the movie business. This discussion was an absolute delight and I hope you enjoy listening to it, as much as I did recording it! Enjoy!

Mark was kind enough to send me the photos below, which he really liked because of the circumstances behind them. While working on the film “21”, Mark and the rest of the production team where able to close off Massachusetts Ave. in Boston and land their camera mounted helicopter, which is no east feet! It had to be cleared with multiple government agencies, as well as the BPD. As he explained it to me, the director even wanted the 22 polls removed from each side the bridge. All of this to get a sweeping a shot of one of the actors on a motorcycle driving across the bridge. Despite all the difficulties and hard work they managed to get it all done! Unfortunately, as it sometimes happens, the shot ended up on the cutting room floor! (Mark is on the far right of the photos, wearing a long sleeve white shirt, jeans, and work boots)

Mark Fitzgerald is pictured on the far right in a white shirt and jeans

Mark’s next film hitting theaters is Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds, premiering later this year. When the pandemic allows for filming to begin, Mark’s next project will be working on the next movie from Academy Award winning director Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Big Short, Step Brother, Vice)!

PODCAST: How To Rob A Bank… with SUPERPOWERS!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this episode of The World’s Best Podcast, Paul Sr. and I discuss which superpowers would be the most useful if you were robbing a bank? As the discussion continues, more about Paul Sr.’s criminal past emerges…

Considering how often super villains rob banks in comic books, there aren’t that many bank robbery scenes in superhero films. However the few scenes that do exist are all pretty fucking awesome. I can think of three great ones… well, two and a half anyway.

  1. The iconic opening sequence of The Dark Knight, when The Joker and his gang of masked clowns rob a mob bank:

2. The great bank robbery scene in Spider-Man 2, where Doc Ock and The Ole’ Wallcrawler’s clash for the first time:

2b. This is what I meant when I said two and a half great bank robbery scenes in superhero movies. This scene from Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t quite a bank robbery. It’s a bunch of thugs with high-tech weaponry trying to steal an ATM, but it’s still a lot of fun, so I wanted to include it here:

For more super-powered bank robbing shenanigans, make sure you listen to this episode of The World’s Best Podcast, posted right here.

PODCASTS: The Invisible Man Review! & My Special Appearance On Cuff’s Basement!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

This was a busy week, so I was late to post a webpage for the latest episode of The World’s Best Podcast, even though the episode came out earlier this week. I think it worked out well, because the delay meant that way I get to show you guys some cool content related to my review of The Invisible Man and promote my guest appearance on Tim Cuff and Ryan McDonald’s podcast, Cuff’s Basement! Going on that podcast was a lot of fun and you can read all about it below my invisible man review content.

Anyway, on this episode of “The World’s Best Podcast”, I review the excellent new thriller THE INVISIBLE MAN! Full Spoilers!  Listen here: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/23699306  Or subscribe on Stitcher, Spreaker, iHeartRadio, Deezer, Podchaser, Castbox, Podcast Addict, Google Podcasts, & Apple Podcasts/ITunes…

During this weeks episode, I talk about how The Invisible Man is among the roster of Universal’s Classic Movie Monsters

Icons such as, Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, and more. These films are largely the reason vampires, werewolves, and various forms of the undead appear so frequently in our popular culture. There have been literally thousands of TV shows and movies featuring vampires and werewolves (sometimes even both). However, in other cultures around the world vampires and werewolves are far less prevalent in popular culture and take a backseat to other supernatural creatures.

I found this awesome piece of art online that gives us a more gruesome and terrifying look at Dracula, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein’s Monster, without losing the classic Universal Monsters “look” that made them so iconic!

During my review of The Invisible Man, I brought up several scenes I love from other movies starring classic universal monsters. Like this fantastic scene from 1999’s The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss:

I LOVE 1999’s The Mummy and this is probably my favorite scene. Wait until the end, Brendan Fraser’s reaction to seeing The Mummy for the first time is fucking CLASSIC!

I also mentioned the iconic werewolf transformation scene in the film, An American Werewolf In London. As well as the much less iconic, but still interesting transformation scene from Benicio Del Toro‘s remake of The Wolfman. You can watch both clips below:

An American Werewolf in London (1981) Transformation Scene
The Wolfman (2010) Transformation Scene

Here’s a side-by-side comparison between The Invisible Man of 1933 and the new 2020 version (without giving too much away about what makes this new incarnation of The Invisible Man so cool…)

Well, that’s it for my review and coverage of The Invisible Man, but we’re not quite done yet today… Now, let’s switch gears here a little bit! It’s two podcasts for the price of one!

As some of my listeners may know, Ryan McDonald who is a frequent co-host on the The World’s Best Podcast and Tim Cuff who was my original co-host on the show, have their own fun and unique podcast called Cuff’s Basement. It’s hilarious, it’s weird, and it’s a blast to listen to. I recently had the chance to make an guest appearance on Cuff’s Basement, on an episode of the show where Ryan, Tim, and I  each picked our 3 Favorite Comic Book Superhero Movies of all time. Of course, being the comic book movie super fans that we are, this ended up being a three-part episode.
