PODCAST: Cult Hit SUPERNATURAL Reaches 300th Episode!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

From L to R: Sam, Dean, & Castiel (Misha Collins) having a few laugh on “Baby”, their trusty ‘67 Chevy Impala

“Saving people, hunting things. The family business.” For 14 Seasons, that’s been the motto of Brother’s, Sam and Dean Winchester (played by actors Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles respectively). Driving around in “Baby”, their 67 Chevy Impala, they’ve faced off against pretty much everything that goes bump in the night. Ghosts, demons, demigods, The Apocalypse (A couple a’ times), vampires, black magick, Djinn, Angels, Lucifer, even God himself and that doesn’t even scratch the surface. Supernatural is one of the most underrated, well acted, creative, scary, fun, and bat-shit crazy shows on TV.

The good new for fans is that there’s no sign of slowing down. The long running CW series has already been picked up for it’s 15th Season. This week Supernatural reached its 300th episode. A gigantic achievement in itself and when it hits Season 15 later this year, it will be one of top 15 longest running scripted series in the history of television. Needless to say, it’s a special milestone for the cast, the crew, and the fans. Consistent with the magnitude of  reaching 300 episodes, the show came out swinging with something special for the fans.  The series usually does something special to make a big deal of their milestones episodes like their 100th or the 200th episodes, usually something for the fans, but this year could be their best yet.

Jeffery Dean Morgan who played John Winchester, Sam and Dean’s father, for the first two seasons of the show, with a minor appearance in season 3,  finally returned to the series for episode 300. Even though the character of John Winchester has been dead for over 10 years now, anyone who has an even passing familiarity with the show will realize that doesn’t matter a whole hell of a lot in the world of Supernatural. Morgan has been wanting to return for guest appearances on the show for years but scheduling had been difficult because he’s become an increasingly popular actor since he left Supernatural.

John and Mary finally reunite after decades apart.

But he never forgot his roots. He stayed in touch with the cast and crew and frequently discussed in interviews how he’d love to return to the show and it was just a matter of finding the time. So it’s pretty damn cool to have John Winchester back, even if it’s just for one episode. He’s such an iconic character, who is so important in the show’s mythology. There’s a great little joke from a few seasons ago, at the beginning of one episode, Sam and Dean come back from a hunt, covered in the blood and guts of god knows whatever they’d been killing the night before. As they walk into the room, we see that Dean is carrying “Lucille” : a baseball bat, wrapped in barbed wire that is the infamous weapon used by Jeffery Dean Morgan’s character Negan on the AMC series The Walking Dead. Dean puts “Lucille”,  which is covered in blood and guts, right down on the table and says “Man, Dad used to love this thing.” It’s moments like this, that make people love Supernatural.

FA8480B5-6D63-467D-9736-86D489323232
Hmmm, that bat looks awful familiar…

A relatively small amount few shows, even good ones, make it past their first season. Hell, most “hit” shows if they’re lucky, get about five seasons. The secret to Supernatural’s success is that, even though it’s not a ratings giant compared to other huge shows on  other larger networks, it’s one of the most solid performers on The CW. It also has a very passionate fan base.  Supernatural’s fans are among the most unique and devoted in the geek community. Which is something that the stars of the show, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki, fully recognize. All of the main actors on the show are known for being notoriously grateful and gracious when dealing with fans in real life

89ABA13C-AC7B-48D8-81C5-9186255796A2

Any series running as long as Supernatural is bound to have its highs and lows, but over 15 years, they have an astonishing level of consistency. That’s pretty damn impressive. At it’s best, Supernatural has produced some of the best seasons of television I’ve ever seen. I know that a bold statement, but there are 3 or 4 seasons that would be in my top 25 best television seasons of all time list. Even at its worst, there’s never been an episode Supernatural of that’s anything less than solid.

C4E73C71-B8CF-497A-A7FB-1C2D09A960B9

That show’s excellence largely comes from the great writing  and the talent and the charisma of the leads on the series. All of the main actors are overlooked far too often and the talent on display in this series isn’t recognized enough. I do you have to tip my hat to  Entertainment Weekly because the magazine  has frequently done cover stories on Supernatural. FIRST LOOK: Game of Thrones: Season 8!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

HBO is notoriously secretive  when it comes to their hit series fantasy Game of Thrones.  They want the audience to know as little as possible coming into each new season. Especially going into the final season.

So far they’ve done a pretty damn good job. The show has always maintained a high level of secrecy to keep the audience surprised. A few years ago, the first 4 episodes of Season 5 leaked online about a month before the Season 5 premiere (I’m certainly DID NOT, find those early episodes online, hook my laptop up to my TV, and watch all 4 episodes alone on a Saturday night, because downloading content like that is WRONG). That incident increased the levels of secrecy and security HBO imposed even more. With April 14 premiere date of the final season fast approaching, we’ve been given very little promotional material showing us anything from the upcoming season. There have been two teasers  which I posted right below, but neither have shown any real content from Season 8. After the teasers, scroll down to all the cool pics HBO released to promote Season 8:

However today HBO dropped a bunch of new pictures from the new season. They mostly look like they are taking place at Winterfell. If I had to guess, the pictures all look like they’re probably from the first 2 episodes of the season. Based on the sets and the way that people are dressing, it seems to be that Jon has made his triumphant return to Winterfell with his new aunt/lover/queen in tow. Let’s dig in…

Goddammit, these two are sexy!

Last we saw the Lord Tyrion, he seemed concerned about these two young lovers. One would think a marriage between these two Houses will only make them stronger. But is Tyrion afraid that Daenerys inherited some of her father‘s jealousy and insanity after all?  Who knows?
EBBA3969-3778-4704-8591-890CF667CFF9
Now, this is a guy who threw a young boy out of 10 story window to hide the fact that he was fucking his own sister, but despite all of that… I’m really rooting for Jamie in the season. In a perfect world, he gets Tyrion to convince Jon and Daenerys to pardon him and he joins the fight for Westeros. Maybe he’ll even end up with Brienne of Tarth, but I think Tormund would have a thing or two to say about that.
FC65B6E6-DE3F-4CE2-8785-F4A4B7099B40
Speaking Of Brienne, as much as I like this character,  I’ve got a strong feeling she’s not gonna make it out of this season alive, unfortunately …
CCB4E1D5-1301-45A0-B89F-BB2FCAAF29B5
…Neither will Varys, I’m afraid.  After all, The Red Woman did say it was his destiny to die in this strange country, but she could’ve just been fucking with him. I mean we all going to die somewhere. Maybe he is destined to die in Westrose, but not for a few more decades? Or he’s fucked.

I’ve got a good feeling that The Onion Night is going to make it out of this one alive.

Ah, Sam. Sweet wonderful Sam.  In a perfect world, things play out like this: Sam becomes an unconventional Maester  (like Q’byrn) or (eventually, years from now), Hand Of The King, to King Jon and Queen Daenerys. All the while, going home each night to fuck his illegitimate wife Gilly and raise his beloved, if non-biological son, Little Sam.

As long as we don’t have some fucked up situation where Daenerys kills Jon out of jealousy because of his claim to the Throne or something crazy. If that doesn’t happen, I think it’s very likely that Sansa will become Warden of The North.

Oh, Arya. Jesus, I don’t know about this one.  Arya’s defined her life by revenge.  When death is all you know, how can you expect to live life? My money is she ain’t making it out of this story.

I’m not really sure how things are going to play out with Bran. It seems like his entire existence has been to ensure humanity survives this upcoming war. So I don’t know where that leaves him when the battle is over.

TRAILER: Justice League VS The Fatal Five!

SHey Everyone,

Paul here…

E29B9DBA-C97B-4C6F-ACAD-BDA926109EAE
The Fatal Five. This movie’s Big Bads.

You all know how much I love the MCU, but I think my favorite cinematic universe could be the what I’m going to call The Batman The Animated Series/Bruce Timm Universe. This Universe includes all time classics like Batman The Animated Series, Superman TheAnimated series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. Bruce Timm having essentially created this shared universe, is the reason his name is a part of the universe’s title. I love both of these universes so much, it would be really hard to pick which of them I hold more dear.

FE5347A8-9147-4EFF-9B67-565B7D699C66   Honestly you’d have to have a gun to my head and a gun to gun my balls, with the gunman screaming in my face, “CHOOSE! NOW! PICK ONE! CHOOSE! I’M NOT FUCKING AROUND! DECIDE! YOU HAVE TO THE COUNT OF 3! THEN I’M GOING TO SHOOT YOU IN THE BALLS AND SHORTLY AFTER THAT, SHOOT YOU IN THE HEAD!CHOOSE! 3… ,2… ,1..!” Then I guess we’d have our answer. But until that day comes, I guess I’ll just have to keepthem both very special in my heart.

52164895-CDD7-4C2D-ACCC-C6FF70B12C10

Which is why I wanted to share this trailer with you guys today. I’m a big fan of the animated movies that DC releases directly to Blu-ray and digital three or four times every year. Some of them are fucking spectacular and are probably some of my favorite comic book movies of all time. The movie I was most looking forward to this year is their adaptation of Batman: Hush, hitting later this year, in early or mid summer. However, while Hush is still my most anticipated DC animated film this year, after watching the trailer below, (which debuted on ign.com) Justice League VS The Fatal Five has my attention in a big, bad way. Check out the trailer below:

It appears, from the animation style, to the voice cast, to the people working on the film behind the scenes, that the movie takes place in The Batman The Animated Series/Bruce Timm Universe.  Last year they released a film called Batman & Harley Quinn that also seemed to take place in what I call the Batman The Animated Series/Bruce Timm Universe, but that movie was pretty shitty. While this one looks really great. It’s awesome to hear the original voice cast from these classic TV shows (I love hearing Kevin Conroy as Batman and George Newbern as Superman), in what looks like an extension of this classic universe, but with some new faces as well. New heroes including Ms. Martian, Mr. Terrific (2 of my personal favorites), Jessica Cruz Green Lantern, and Starman. I love see DC’s Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman), alongside new and unique heroes.

D8E45A9D-1288-44B0-AA5F-21868C3D3854

It looks like this is the next DC animated movie that’s coming out this year and they usually release their second film around March or April, with the summer release reserved for the third film. However this year they are releasing a fourth films, one of which will focus on Wonder Woman, so we may end up seeing Justice League VS The Fatal Five sooner than we think. I’m sure a release date will be announced soon. I wasn’t super interested in this project  at first, but after watching the trailer, I’m psyched.  I thought it looked great and I wanted to share it with all of you. Please let me know what you think in the comments below and thank you for reading!

UPDATE: Justice League VS The Fatal Five will be available for Digital Download on 3/30/19 and Blu-Ray 4/16/19! I

Super Bowl 2019 Movie Trailers!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here..

When I watch the Super Bowl every year, my favorite thing is to see all of the cool new trailers that debut during the game. The biggest movies of the upcoming year usually reserve spots to debut teasers and trailers during the game’s commercials.  But if you have no interest in watching the game or you just want one easy place where you can find all of the coolest trailers as soon as they drop, I’ve got you covered. Instead of trying to find them all on YouTube, keep checking back to this page all night. I’ll be updating each new trailer and posting them here, live as they debut!

Enjoy the game and check back here starting at 6:40pm EST…

All right!!!! GAME TIME! Aaaand… here… we… GO!

CAPTAIN MARVEL

This looks awesome! Can’t wait! March 8th!

AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Oh, Fuck Yes. Marvel is BRINGING IT tonight!

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

This looks like an absolute blast! I loved the full trailer they put out earlier this week. Johnson has charisma to spare and Statham’s the man. Not to mention Iris Elba as the super soldier villain! Someone made a great comment on YouTube saying “The next movie will have Hobbs and Shaw fighting Thanos.”

Alita: Battle Angel

Meh. I’d watch this, I guess. Maybe. I’ve heard mixed things. I might see it and give a review for the site. We’ll see. I think it looks kind of cool, but it also could be another Ghost In The Shell.

Us

This movie looks fucking HORRIFYING, in the best way. I almost shit my pants just watching the trailer! This is from Jordan Peele who gave us the excellent Get Out. I love horror movies, so this is definitely must see for me.

The Twilight Zone (New TV Series)

There have been a few attempts to revive this show with varying degrees of success, but  Jordan Peele’s involvement gets my hopes up. CBS ALL ACCESS is really bringing it for this Super Bowl

Toy Story 4

I almost missed this one because it technically aired after the game, but I wanted to make sure to include it. I’m a big believer that great stories need great endings and Toy Story 3 is one of the greediest endings to a trilogy of films of all time. So Toy Story 4  better have a damn good reason to justify its existence other than the obvious answer which is: money. Hopefully I’m wrong and it’s just the masterpiece we need to follow up one of the all-time great animated films Toy Story 3. But I doubt it.

Well, another Super Bowl comes to an end.  While not the best year for Super Bowl movie trailers, there were a few solid ones in there. Particularly Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. I hope you guys enjoyed my coverage of the movie trailers that played during the game and I hope you come back next year to enjoy some more of the same! Thanks for watching!

TEASER: Game of Thrones: The Final Season!

Hey Everyone, Paul here. This a great teaser. It doesn’t show us much, but it gets us in the mood. Now we finally know, the End Begins… April 14! Winter Is Coming.

3Below Season 1: Reviewed

0ed6676e-36e2-49b3-a839-56178a05dbb2

Earlier this year, Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia ended after their third season.  As far as I know, they completed the story and ended according to the schedule that creator Guillermo Del Toro had envisioned.  I loved the series, and I was sad to see it go.  Then about a month ago or so, I saw on one of those “Everything new coming to Netflix in December” articles, something called “3Below: Tales of Arcadia,” and the article had an image, and it was clear that the animation was similar style to Trollhunters, but the article itself didn’t mention whether or not the two were related, so a quick IMDb check confirmed that his was a spinoff series, and a brief conversation with Paul, he informed me that this was the second in a planned 3 part series.

612f81da-160b-489e-b90e-7ad697c0e182

Anyway, the show has been out for about three weeks, and I just finished watching the first season, and I’ve got to say it’s pretty good.  It’s not as good as Trollhunters, (my 2 year-old would give up about thirty seconds into every episode and say “we watch real Trollhunters now?”) but it’s good.

b589c0b0-ce47-4720-9ca4-e336aaceadaf
Above: Krel, guardian Varvatos Vex, & Aja in their natural form.  Below: In their human disguises.

First off, even though the two main characters Aja and Krel, extra-terrestrial (they don’t like the term aliens!) siblings living in Arcadia were featured briefly in Trollhunters, the show had a little more work to setting it up than Trollhunters did.  Trollhunters starts out on Earth, on a pretty standard version we would all recognize, and then reveals that there is a secret underworld of trolls, and other magical creatures; they start with the default and add.  3Below however starts on a planet known as Acaridian 5 and tells the story of Princess Aja and Prince Krel on the day they are to become the King and Queen in waiting, and are attacked by enemies and have to go on the run.  We don’t see Earth until the end of the episode.  This doesn’t make it a worse show that Trollhunters, but certainly it gives it a different set of challenges to overcome.  They do so pretty well, but it takes just a little longer to really get invested.

ad6df1f1-b4b0-4ed0-952f-c450d7a012b7b1410bec-8c8d-4726-bfa6-00fea9e66b3b

I’m not going to get too into spoilers, but I will say that one of the things I really like about this show, is that they create a lot of new mythology within this universe, and they aren’t just applying the same formula as Trollhunters to this, meaning it’s not an Madlibs style situation where they’re like alright we need this role because Trollhunters had it.  Trollhunters is largely about Jim and his friends going after something, and this is definitely more of Aja and Krell running from something, and not necessarily in a cowardly way, but in order to protect their kingdom.

b67c9081-f116-44ba-8886-f2413e19b797

Another thing that I really like about this show, is that they manage to pull in characters we’ve gotten to know through Trollhunters, and build upon them.  We get to see Jim, Toby, and Claire, but we also get to see Steve, who’ a bully on Trollhuntersgiven some fleshing out, fully realized on this show, as he quickly has a crush on Aja after she kicks his ass.  We get to see Senor Uhl, less as the authority figure to be thwarted or avoided, but more as the protector when other humans seem to target the twins in their human forms.

                                           (Steve & Aja. Steve’s come a long way…)

All in all, I really liked this show, and I hope that we get to see another season or two (whatever Guillermo Del Toro has envisioned) and now that I’ve seen how aliens and magic have played with each other in this setting, I’m really interested in seeing what he has in mind for the 3rd series he’s planning.

Doctor Who Series 11: Review

ef721eb4-a3af-4000-a297-7879a8da254f

A little over a year ago, I wrote about What I Wanted to See from Doctor Who, going forward, specifically because Jodie Whitaker was about to become the first female Doctor in the show’s history.  The big thing that I didn’t want to see was the over sexualization of the Doctor, just because she would now be female, and they did that.  Arguably of all the Doctors of the modern run, she was the least sexual, or sexualized, and I’m happy with that, because after all this is an near immortal alien being with untold thousands of years of accumulated knowledge, whose consciousness never really dies. The Doctor  is nearly a goddess (formerly a god), hanging out with people who are merely decades old, and extremely mortal.  The sexual/romantic nature of that is always a bit questionable, so steering away from it, at least in her first season as a woman, was probably a good idea.

73f33d0a-4972-4b8e-b297-f288c6d78bef

Now, by that single metric the show was a success, but as you can imagine, whether or not a show’s main character is or is not over-sexualized isn’t the true determination of its quality.  This season was incredibly divisive, from what I saw on some Facebook pages, and the Doctor Who subreddit, this was a love it or hate it season.

dd83fc88-0131-4f40-a702-b5e0451923ac

Many were claiming the show wasn’t Doctor Who anymore, citing that the new format of “Team TARDIS” with the Doctor and three season long companions, changed the dynamic too much from the Doctor and single companion model, which had been the case in most of the previous season, the only change being when a companion would bring on a boyfriend (Mickey, or Rory), or when they’d meet other aliens/time-travelers (Captain Jack, River Song).  Personally, I liked the dynamic, it was definitely different, but I don’t want to watch the same old thing over and over.

761ab377-a693-4b0b-a755-85b247497cec

The dynamic, and the characterization of the four TARDIS inhabitants was for me the strength of the season. The writers and actors had clearly worked to flesh out the characters.  Graham and Ryan had unresolved issues that became very naturally resolved, as step-grandfather and step-grandson, and really played out well.  Yas learned that her family were not all the tradition following people she had thought, and that her wanting something different and adventure weren’t that far off from her grandmother.  Finally, the Doctor, who is always a bit different after regenerations was just that a bit different, but really not too different, enough to reinvigorate, but not so much as to alienate… at least for most.

One of the major complaints that I saw on Reddit, was that the Doctor is too much of a feminist, and more specifically a dreaded SJW.  Honestly, I don’t really see it.  The Doctor of the 1960’s may have been much less feminist than Jodie Whitaker’s Doctor, but I don’t think the last couple of iterations have been.  The truth is, like much of serialized sci-fi, Doctor Who is a show about striving for the fullest of human potential, and much of that is in a social aspect.  Star Trek boldly went with the first interracial kiss on American broadcast television, and as early as season one of this reboot, we had a character of Captain Jack Harkness, who for lack of a better term seemed omni-sexual, but was certainly as attracted to Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor, as he was to Rose.  This isn’t really new for the show, nor for the character.

What was new about this dynamic for the character is that suddenly the Doctor is being taken less seriously because of her gender, and this is frustrating when she is for all intents and purposes the most authority on nearly every subject in the universe.  So, there was a little time dedicated to it, but it was a surprisingly little amount of time, usually no more than a line per episode (sometimes nothing at all).  So, personally I assume that this criticism of the ‘overwhelming feminism’ is little more than Trolling.

Doctor Who Series 11

But there are certainly some genuine criticisms, and I think it’s really important to take those seriously, because I personally want the show to be its best, and it cannot do that if the writers and show-runner bury their heads in the sand.  The big piece of genuine criticism, I think, was overuse and clunky exposition.  Lots of people online have mentioned it, but it bears repeating.  This show, like a lot of heavy sci-fi uses exposition more than some other genres, and that’s ok, but I would say this season seemed to do it the most, and that’s not a good thing.  I don’t any of the episodes were ruined by exposition, but in a show like this, they need to show and not tell as much as possible.

Doctor Who Series 11

I would say that this season gets either a C+ or maybe (if I’m being generous) a B- from me.  There was plenty of fun, and the characters were really done, but other than that I think there wasn’t enough there for me.   Some seasons have multiple episodes I would point people to, to get a feel for what the show should be, and this season really only had one (two if you count the New Years special, which is really Season 12 Episode 0).

“Rosa,” which was episode 3, tells the story of our travels getting thrown into 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, and meeting Rosa Parks just days before her famous arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus.  This was a great episode in pretty much every way, and I don’t want to say too much as to ruin it, but I will say this, even though the show does a lot of historical episodes, and places the doctor into a lot of historical scenarios, I’m not sure any have had the possibility of alienating the audience like this before, and it doesn’t (at least not for the real reasons).  You see in these historical episodes, a lot of times we find out that the Doctor was actually responsible for setting in motion some major historical event, and this hasn’t really ever been a problem, because it’s either played as a bit of a gag, or maybe it’s a historical event without an individual historically receiving credit, and so the Doctor isn’t stealing anyone’s credit.  That’s a fine line for the show to thread, and watching it I was a bit worried “oh please don’t make it that the Doctor sets this up, or take anything away from Rosa Parks,” and it doesn’t.  It’s brilliant in letting the plot of the show revolve around the show without setting really touching the moving parts of the actual history.  Think about when Marty McFly tries really hard in Back to the Future 2 to not interact with or change anything Marty McFly from Back to the Future 1 does in 1955, it’s kind of like thbat.  It’s by far the episode of this season that shows what Doctor Who can and should be.

MUST WATCH: Gotham: The Final Season (Premiere Review)

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Tonight the final season of Gotham premiered on Fox and honestly I was very excited to watch it. It’s hard to believe that this is the same show that just a few years ago had some of the absolute worst superhero writing on TV.  When Gotham began, it was more or less a shittier Smallville, with proto-versions of Batman’s rogues gallery popping up each week for Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon to deal with. It was a shame because the show was very well cast and all the actors were perfect in their roles. Since the very first episode, Ben McKenzie has made a great Jim Gordon (he was also the voice of Batman in the animated film adaptation of Batman: Year One). Many of the great Batman stories are also great Jim Gordon stories, so it was very important for them to get this character right.

We even got to see a part of Bruce Wayne’s life that is very rarely explored, the years immediately following the murder of his parents. David Mazouz is easily one of the most compelling live action versions of Bruce Wayne we’ve seen. He conveys Bruce’s dark, brooding intelligence without ever sounding like a whiny brat. With excellent actors memorably playing classic Batman characters like Alfred, The Penguin, The Riddler, Selina Kyle and more, the series felt like a frustrating waste of great talent. Terrible writing hamstrung what could otherwise have been an excellent take on the Batman mythos.

About halfway through Season 3, specifically the mid-season finale, something fundamentally changed about the show for the better. I think there are two big reasons for this and one of them was how the series began to use Bruce Wayne. First of all, David Mazouz had grown up enough that he was just old enough to start becoming more crucial to the action going on in the story. Pretty much from the pilot on, Bruce has slowly been learning important skills that would become crucial on his journey to becoming Batman. Season 3’s mid-season finale saw Bruce being taken hostage at a circus by Jeremiah Valeska. If you’re not familiar with Gotham, Jeremiah (played by Cameron Monaghan) is basically their version of The Joker, and a damn good one too. The episode culminated with a show down in a hall of mirrors between Bruce and Jeremiah, where Bruce comes very close to killing Jeremiah. The whole episode was pretty great and I found myself watching the rest of the season once the show returned from it’s hiatus. You started to see Bruce take a more active role as a vigilante even though he wasn’t dressed like Batman.

The second reason the series changed for the better in my opinion, was because it stopped being a bad prequel series, building up to some day in the future where we get to see Bruce put on the Batman costume in the last 5 minutes of the final episode. In the same way that Smallville was entirely built around the show teasing Clark eventually putting on the Superman costume, that we only see him wear for about three seconds in the series finale. Instead, Gotham became more of an Elseworlds Batman story. I think it’s the smartest thing the show could’ve done because they took the mythology and made it their own. They were no longer slaves to the mythology of the Batman comic books. They allowed their story to be an alternate take on the mythos. This choice gave the show its own identity. It also made it more exciting for the audiences because things weren’t necessarily going to play out exactly as they had in the comic books. As a result the back half of Season 3 was a hell of a lot of fun and frankly I love Season 4. One of the reasons I love the show Krypton on Syfy is that the show isn’t a prequel, it’s more about the DC Universe’s past being changed by time travel. Changing Krypton‘s history, changes the history of the entire Superman story and by extension the entire DC Universe.

So coming into this final season, which was going to be drawing from classic Batman stories like No Man’ Land and Zero Year (In fact this episode’s title is “Year Zero”), I was pretty psyched to see what they were going to do. I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.

After the events of last season, Gotham has been completely cut off from the outside world. The bridges are down in the city and it’s been 87 days since Gotham was officially declared a No Man’s Land by the US government. Unfortunately, not everyone who wanted to had the means to leave the city before it was cut off from the rest of the world. Children, families, innocent people have been trapped in a city that has become an almost post-apocalyptic dystopia. Gotham’s been carved up into territories, with different factions controlling different neighborhoods. Penguin Control City Hall and the surrounding area. He’s also the only person in the city manufacturing bullets for guns, which are more or less currency in the city. Scarecrow, Firefly, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and other villains have also carved up their own peace of the city.  Somewhat ominously, Jerimiah Valeska hasn’t been seen since the beginning of No Man’s Land. I have a feeling he’s waiting to make his own suitably dramatic entrance.

The only part of Gotham City for the average citizen who’d been left behind is the area controlled by the GCPD. Gordon with Bullock and Lucius Fox by his side, are not only leading what’s left of the GCPD, they’re also protecting and feeding hundreds of refugees and supplies are running out. A lot of this is straight out of some iconic Batman storylines, so as a longtime Batman comic book fan this is cool to see.

Fortunately, Bruce Wayne and Alfred decided to stay behind as well and Bruce is doing everything he can to get supplies smuggled in. Not only to the people suffering in the city, but medicine for Selena Kyle as well. She was shot in the stomach at point-blank range by Jeremiah in the season finale last year and unless something drastic is done she could be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of her life. Of course this heavily weighs on Bruce, who blames himself for her condition.

Part of the fun of this season is seeing how close Bruce is to becoming Batman, even though he isn’t ready yet. There’s an early scene where Bruce takes down a bunch of thugs trying to steal medical supplies. The power has gone out, so he uses night vision goggles courtesy of the Lucius Fox to take them out one by one, in very Batman fashion. However, just when it looks like he’s saved the day, the lights come back on, the night vision goggles blind him, and the thieves get away. This is an important scene because it shows us that while Bruce is well on his way to becoming The Batman that we know, who could’ve easily taken down a group of bad guys in a situation like this, but he’s not quite there yet. He’s still making crucial mistakes and he still has much to learn. It’s important the series didn’t just suddenly turn him into Batman over night. Bruce’s journey throughout the series has felt earned. Based on his training it makes perfect sense for him to be exactly at the level he’s at now.

The episode largely sets up the status quo for the season and puts the pieces in play for things to come. We know things are going to get a lot worse before they get better because the episode opens with a flash forward to No Mans Land Day 391 and shows Gordon, Bullock, The Penguin, The Riddler, and the rest of the GCPD fending off a full blown siege by… someone. For Penguin and The Riddler to be teaming up with Gordon, it must be a pretty serious common enemy.

All in all I really enjoyed this episode and considering that it was mostly set up, I have a feeling once the story really gets going this has the potential to be a fantastic final season for Gotham. I couldn’t help but love the scene when Gordon and Bruce were standing on the roof of the GCPD together. With Gordon shining a spotlight on the sky to give people hope, foreshadowing so many of their interactions in the years to come. As Bruce walks away at the end of the scene, Gordon ask him if he regrets staying behind in Gotham, Bruce replies “No. You?”. Jim Gordons smiles and says “Hell no”. Am I looking forward to the rest of Gotham’s Final Season? Hell, yes.
