UPDATED! NEW TRAILER & FIRST LOOK: Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

UPDATE! Check out the First Teaser Trailer for Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny!

For my money, Empire Magazine has always been the premiere movie periodical. So I’ve been happy to see Empire transition gracefully into the digital age. They still manage to consistently get exclusive coverage of the most highly anticipated films. In their latest issue, Empire has the first details and images of 2023’s Indiana Jones 5!

In these exclusive images from Empire, we get our best look yet at the final adventure of Dr. Henry Jones Jr., the greatest action hero in cinema history.

I’m a MASSIVE Indiana Jones fan. The series is a big reason I fell in love with movies in the first place. I’ve probably seen Temple of Doom hundreds of times. Though heavily criticized upon it’s release, I’ve always enjoyed Indiana Jones The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull as a flawed, but solid entry in The Indiana Jones Saga. However, I still always wanted just one more film. Indy deserves a final kick ass movie, to send the series off with a bang. And it looks like that’s exactly what we’re going to get from the filmmakers of Indiana Jones 5, making it one of my most anticipated movies of 2023.

Notably, this will be the first Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. Director James Mangold will be helming the as-yet-untitled Indiana Jones 5, with Spielberg staying on as producer. Mangold was the filmmaker behind 2017’s Logan, so he certainly knows a thing or two about sending an aging movie icon off for one last ride. Mangold was a genius pick for this project. I can’t think of a director better suited to take on Indiana Jones 5.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s god daughter
Mads Mikkelsen as Voller, the film’s big bad. Who Mikkelsen partially based on real life NASA engineer and ex-Nazi, Wernher von Braun

Even with the film months away from release, some of the more cynical audience members have regarded the very idea of an Indiana Jones 5, as pushing the franchise beyond it’s expiration date. Especially considering the negative reception the last installment received from a significant portion of the fan base. The common refrain from certain movie fans online about Indiana Jones 5, have all been some variation of: “An elderly Ford, still running around with his fedora and whip?” and “Isn’t he a little too old for this shit?” or “C’mon, how believable is it for an 80 year old man to make another, very physical, action movie epic like this?”. Well, as the great Tyrion Lannister once said “Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.”. A sentiment that, director James Mangold, has certainly taken to heart. Lesser filmmakers may have tried to coast by, just cracking a few jokes old man jokes and hope the audience is willing to suspend their disbelief, Instead, when he was brought on board, Mangold decided to take these criticisms head on and make them the thematic heart of the film. A story about a lifelong adventurer coming to the end of his epic adventures. Mangold felt very strongly that Indiana Jones needed a movie to close out the franchise, to give it an ending. Mangold took what other saw as weaknesses and made them into strengths that are the thematic pillars of this movie. The director saw Harrison Ford and his character’s age, as an opportunity to give Indiana Jones a Grand Finale!

It’s also been revealed that the upcoming movie opens with a massive flashback, action sequence, bringing us back to the era of Raiders of The Lost Ark. This sequence will feature the most cutting edge version of the de-aging technology we’ve increasingly seen on the big screen over the last several years, allowing Ford to play Indy in both time periods. However, the flashback opening with a younger Indy isn’t just for fun, the sequence taking place in 1944 connects directly to the film’s main story, taking place in 1969. Very little is known about the film’s plot, other than it involves the NASA Apollo Missions and Indy once again dealing with his most despised adversaries, Nazis. However, I think it’s pretty safe to say that the movie will involve a lot of glob trotting, adventuring to exotic locations, and the search for some sort of legendary, archaeological artifact. Possibly even supernatural in nature.

Boyd Holbrook as Klaber. Voller’s henchman.

Indiana Jones 5 opens in theaters June 30, 2023

My Problem with The Daenerys Twist in GoT (And a couple other details this season)

If you’re not caught up on Game of Thrones, I’m going to be spoiling some stuff for you, so please leave now if you don’t want that.

This season has had some received some major flack from audiences for all sorts of issues, and obviously I don’t agree with everyone, but I wanted to talk about a couple that I don’t like. I guess, I’ll start with the big one, the title of this article kind of hints at.  Daenerys turning crazy/bad/however else we want to categorize her.  I didn’t dislike this until the moment in this week’s episode when the bells are ringing, and she looks over at the Red Keep, and decides to lay waste on the people of King’s Landing.

You see, while Daenerys has never shied away from being violent to achieve her goals, there was always some sense of morality to it, and she was never casual with innocents.  Up until this point, the fact that she’s burned the Iron Fleet, and the guard towers, and as much as she has destroyed, makes sense, and largely is the right thing to do, to avoid unnecessary death of innocents.

Then she stops, sitting atop the final remaining dragon, and looks down, the bells are ringing, and it is clear that she has won, and she snaps and proceeds to go further.  Now, if she’d done everything and  never stopped, never paused, and was just caught up in it, and therefore didn’t notice the bells, or the peace, or anything else and got carried away, this would be a more satisfying example of her going too far, and perhaps being the threat Varys died to stop (which I thought was played excellently).  Also if she had that moment of pause, and then flew over and destroyed the Red Keep, I could get that too.  But she pauses, looks around, sees she has won and unleashes fury on the innocent, which is out of character.  It’s not getting carried away, or going too far as many of her past behavior has shown, it was her snapping, and it is out of character for her.

I also think that if it had been more along the lines of her getting carried away and going too far, even way too far, this would allow the necessary characters to say “oh we need Jon Snow to sit on the Iron Throne” without the writers betraying the character of Daenerys to justify that final play that it seems is coming.

I mentioned Varys, and I think Varys is a prime example of how the characters should be thinking about Daenerys, his last words are “I hope I’m wrong about her,” (or something similar) but he honestly believes he is not.  That’s because she’s riding the edge of righteous and power-hungry, and he is forced to make a decision unsure if he’s correct, it makes his decisions more bold.  Now if Jon realizes she’s a mad-Queen, and rebels against her, it will not be a bold act, but rather the obvious one for someone who will always risk his life for what’s right.  It takes away the ‘risk of being wrong.’

Now, there were plenty of moments in addition to Varys’s death which I thought were well executed, I liked the final battle with the Hound and the Mountain, and I thought that Arya leaving because Cersai is dead regardless of what happens, worked really well.

But there were also moments in which it seemed like they tried to eat their cake and have it too.  Jaime could have gone with Brienne (I didn’t really want to see that, but once it happened I liked it) or he could go back to Cersai, but I think having him do both really cut through both.  That’s ultimately what I think the problem with this season is (it’s the worst of GoT, but it’s still pretty damn good otherwise): they want to both shit and get off the pot at the same time, and they spent years elaborately creating characters and beats, and now they’re trying to tie them all up far to quickly.

FIRST LOOK: Game of Thrones: Season 8!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

HBO is notoriously secretive  when it comes to their hit series fantasy Game of Thrones.  They want the audience to know as little as possible coming into each new season. Especially going into the final season.

So far they’ve done a pretty damn good job. The show has always maintained a high level of secrecy to keep the audience surprised. A few years ago, the first 4 episodes of Season 5 leaked online about a month before the Season 5 premiere (I’m certainly DID NOT, find those early episodes online, hook my laptop up to my TV, and watch all 4 episodes alone on a Saturday night, because downloading content like that is WRONG). That incident increased the levels of secrecy and security HBO imposed even more. With April 14 premiere date of the final season fast approaching, we’ve been given very little promotional material showing us anything from the upcoming season. There have been two teasers  which I posted right below, but neither have shown any real content from Season 8. After the teasers, scroll down to all the cool pics HBO released to promote Season 8:

However today HBO dropped a bunch of new pictures from the new season. They mostly look like they are taking place at Winterfell. If I had to guess, the pictures all look like they’re probably from the first 2 episodes of the season. Based on the sets and the way that people are dressing, it seems to be that Jon has made his triumphant return to Winterfell with his new aunt/lover/queen in tow. Let’s dig in…

Goddammit, these two are sexy!

Last we saw the Lord Tyrion, he seemed concerned about these two young lovers. One would think a marriage between these two Houses will only make them stronger. But is Tyrion afraid that Daenerys inherited some of her father‘s jealousy and insanity after all?  Who knows?

Now, this is a guy who threw a young boy out of 10 story window to hide the fact that he was fucking his own sister, but despite all of that… I’m really rooting for Jamie in the season. In a perfect world, he gets Tyrion to convince Jon and Daenerys to pardon him and he joins the fight for Westeros. Maybe he’ll even end up with Brienne of Tarth, but I think Tormund would have a thing or two to say about that.

FC65B6E6-DE3F-4CE2-8785-F4A4B7099B40
Speaking Of Brienne, as much as I like this character,  I’ve got a strong feeling she’s not gonna make it out of this season alive, unfortunately …

CCB4E1D5-1301-45A0-B89F-BB2FCAAF29B5
…Neither will Varys, I’m afraid.  After all, The Red Woman did say it was his destiny to die in this strange country, but she could’ve just been fucking with him. I mean we all going to die somewhere. Maybe he is destined to die in Westrose, but not for a few more decades? Or he’s fucked.

A429DDD0-3AA1-46B6-91A1-EDC38317D3A1
I’ve got a good feeling that The Onion Night is going to make it out of this one alive.

Ah, Sam. Sweet wonderful Sam.  In a perfect world, things play out like this: Sam becomes an unconventional Maester  (like Q’byrn) or (eventually, years from now), Hand Of The King, to King Jon and Queen Daenerys. All the while, going home each night to fuck his illegitimate wife Gilly and raise his beloved, if non-biological son, Little Sam.

B99DC9C0-5779-4439-AA3F-54551FE43302
As long as we don’t have some fucked up situation where Daenerys kills Jon out of jealousy because of his claim to the Throne or something crazy. If that doesn’t happen, I think it’s very likely that Sansa will become Warden of The North.

4918E808-22E5-49BE-94DA-EE0E291A1148
Oh, Arya. Jesus, I don’t know about this one.  Arya’s defined her life by revenge.  When death is all you know, how can you expect to live life? My money is she ain’t making it out of this story.

B0CD352C-D392-46FF-86CB-C5D421C32B7D
I’m not really sure how things are going to play out with Bran. It seems like his entire existence has been to ensure humanity survives this upcoming war. So I don’t know where that leaves him when the battle is over.

Your own decisions have led you to be so alone, Cersie.

132FD959-F7DF-405E-A97B-D6CDA6BBE3F0
I think either Jaimie or Tyrion will kill her, but my money’s on Jaimie.  Or they could throw us a curveball, who knows?

One last look at our heroes …

Godddammit, Jon Snow is a Grade A prime cut of Beefcake!

Anyway, thanks for reading!
