THE FLASH: New Trailer!!!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Last week was the annual Cinema-Con event. Movie studios give presentations to all of the major movie theater chains from around the country, to promote the major films they have coming out for the year. The studios want the theater owners to get excited about their biggest films to get them on as many screens as possible. Most of the presentations of trailers, scenes from a film, appearances from directors and stars. But occasionally studios will show films in their entirety at the event, often months before the movie’s premiere. Studios only do this if the have a tremendous amount of confidence in the film they’re showing. A recent example was when Paramount screened Top Gun: Maverick at Cinema-Con, a film that would go on to become one of the biggest commercial and critical hits of the last few years. In some circles (Quentin Tarantino, for one), Top Gun: Maverick was even credited as having a large roll in reviving the movie theater industry. So when news comes out that a studio is planning to screen one of their movies at Cinema-Con, it’s a pretty big deal. So when Warner Bros. announced that they’d be screening The Flash at Cinema-Con, it got the attention of a lot of people.

To say The Flash solo movie has had a bumpy road to the big screen would be an understatement. With an original release date of March 2018, behind the scenes drama plagued the films development, causing the film’s release date repeatedly pushed back. From the jump, Warner Bros completely lacked any real plan or vision for their DC films beyond a vague attempt to duplicate the success of The Marvel Cinematic Universe. Multiple directors were attached to the movie only to subsequently leave the project. Even when the movie was finally completed, The Flash was dragged. Greatinto another massive shit storm with Ezra Miller’s very public break down last year.

Despite all of it’s problems, the buzz surrounding the movie itself was extremely positive. James Gunn was on record saying The Flash was one of the best comic book movies he’d ever seen (considering that he’d recently become the head of DC Studios, most people took that statement with a grain of salt). Miraculously however, it look like Gunn may be proven right after all. Since it was screened at Cinema-Con, the consensus among those that have seen The Flash, is extremely positive. The general reception seems to be that the movie is excellent. In spite of it’s production problems, this movie has some big things going for it.

The return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, is a huge draw for audience. And people who love comic book, movies, and people who just love movies in general will both be excited about his return to this classic character. Keaton’s Batman is the wildcard. Out of all the actors who played The Caped Crusader, no one has portrayed Bruce’s rage and mental instability, quite as well as Michael Keaton. Getting a look at how that guy, that character has evolved over the last 30 years is really fucking interesting.

The film also has some very talented people behind the scenes. Such as director Andy Muschietti, the filmmaker behind the fantastic IT movies (a director who has apparently knocked this one out of the park, too). Early word is that it’s total blast, the performances are great, and there are quite a few surprises.

I’ve been looking forward to The Flash for quite awhile, so I was very happy to hear that the final product sounds like it’s gonna be something pretty special. Check out the new trailer right here.

It’s sort of funny and ironic that Michael Keaton’s Batman is much older than the last time we saw him play The Dark Knight on the big screen, yet he’s far more agile and physically formidable than he was 30 years ago. Comic book movies were still a joke before 1989’s Batman. Superhero films weren’t all that common when he first played Batman in the original Tim Burton movies. The Batman suit was a giant, uncomfortable, thick piece of rubber, so much so that the actors and stunt men could barely move in it. Looking back on those Batman films, you’ll notice, whenever Batman hast to look to the left, or to the right, he can’t actually turn his head. He had to turn his entire torso, because he couldn’t move his head., which looks really weird. That was just a result of the filmmaking imitations of the time. So it will be really cool and exciting to see a Michael Keaton Batman that is actually physically formidable.

Here’s the official synopsis: Barry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future.

The Flash hits theaters on June 16, 2023

Grant Gustin’s Flash (The TV/Arrowverse Flash) was rumored to be, but is NOT appearing in the movie. I just thought this was a cool piece of concept art

PODCAST: Is Michael Keaton Returning To Play Batman?!!!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this week’s episode of The World’s Best Podcast, Big Paul Sr. returns to the show for a sobering reminder of how aging can lead to a steep cognitive decline! More importantly, we cover the big news of the week: Michael Keaton may be returning to play Batman alongside Ezra Miller’s Flash, in the upcoming Flashpoint movie? The man who many people think is still the best to ever wear the cape and the cowl, returning to the role of The Dark Knight is extremely exciting!

Getting a Flash movie to the big screen has been an enormous struggle for DC and Warner Brothers. The film has already gone through multiple writers/directors and was originally scheduled for release more than two years ago. Barring anymore disasters, The Flash is going to be helmed by Andy Muschietti, who directed the recent hit horror films, IT and IT: Chapter Two. Despite all the drama behind the scenes, one thing has remain constant: The Flash film will be an adaptation of the seminal Flash storyline, Flashpoint.

Written by Geoff Johns with art by Andy Kubert, Flashpoint told the story of Barry Allen (The Flash) going back in time to prevent his mothers murder. However, changing this one event has dire and far reaching consequences that Barry never could have foreseen. Barry finds himself in a much darker and dangerous version of the DCU that he knows. Kind of like Back To The Future II. However, one of the most significant and interesting changes is revealed when Barry heads to Wayne Manor to seek out the help of his friend and fellow JL member, Batman. When Barry enters The Batcave, a nearly psychotic Batman attacks him. At which point Barry makes a horrifying discovery, the man underneath the bat cowl is actually Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s father! As a result of Barry‘s manipulation of the timeline, one of the major changes effected the creation of The Dark Knight on that fateful night in Crime Alley, in Gotham City all those years ago when The Wayne’s were attacked by a mugger. Bruce was now the one shot and killed, instead of his parents. So Thomas Wayne became Batman. A much more violent and unhinged Batman. Working together, Barry and Thomas Wayne set out to fix the timeline. That’s the set up.

This is just speculation on my part, but like a lot of comic book adaptations of specific stories, I think a lot of liberties will be taken with the source material with this Flashpoint film. A good example is Captain America: Civil War, that story was based on the miniseries Civil War and is vastly different from the source material. So what I think will happen is, maybe instead of an alternate timeline, Barry will enter an alternate universe, like the universe of Tim Burton’s Batman and that’s where he’ll meet and team up with Michael Keaton‘s Dark Knight. Maybe he travels to another alternate universe with Barry, I don’t know how it will work. But you can definitely see how they could fit Michael Keaton’s Batman into a story like this.

I know DC also wants to use Keaton in a role similar to Nick fury in the MCU, one example that’s been rumored suggests Keaton’s Batman showing up in a Batgirl movie. However, I think if DC and Warner Bros. want to do a film about a young Bat-themed hero, they would be crazy not to adapt Batman Beyond. It works perfectly, an older Bruce Wayne played by Keaton, training Terry McGinnis as the next Batman in futuristic Gotham City. It was a phenomenal TV series and it could be a phenomenal film series, as well.

Bottom line is, there a lot of thrilling possibilities with Michael Keaton returning to play Batman and all of them are exciting! We get into in all on this episode so, enjoy!

The Flash or Flashpoint (whatever they end up calling it) is currently set to hit theaters on June 3, 2022

Lastly, DC Animation did an adaptation of Flashpoint, called Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Not only is it one of their best animated films, it’s also one of my favorite superhero movies of all time, period. I highly recommend you checking it out, you can find it on iTunes and other streaming services and I have included a link where you can purchase Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (for pretty damn cheap) on Blu-ray: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/justice-league-the-flashpoint-paradox-blu-ray-2013/9343093.p?skuId=9343093&ref=212&loc=1&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3Nv3BRC8ARIsAPh8hgLwh_kLVKQR71iVmaxPM7yK8_G8RZxXtQSCwppslGvgdcOhDdynn2MaAjyHEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

How To Treat Source Material by Guest Writer Michael Cole

I’m fortunate enough to know many talented and creative people. Some of them have already contributed great stuff to World’s Best Media. Like Tim Cuff, my cohost on The World’s Best Podcast with Paul & Tim, or Ryan McDonald who created the amazing promotional video for that podcast.  Both Ryan and Tim have contributed much more than that to this creative project I started, but one person who’s had a big influence on this entire thing who hasn’t gotten his due, is an old friend of mine named Michael Cole. Mike’s an extremely talented writer who has his own blog and has published a book of his own short stories called “Everything I’ve Got: A Collection Of Short Stories, Poems, and Essays”. He was the person I went to when I knew I wanted to start a blog and there would be no World’s Best Media without Mike Cole. One of my goals, when I created World’s Best Media was to  give a forum to all of these talented people I knew to offer what they’ve created to the world.  So I’ve been wanting to do something with Mike specifically for some time and we are going to have him be a special correspondence for World’s Best Media.  Mike will be contributing guest articles every now and again on topics similar to the type of thing we cover all the time on all our podcasts and blogs. Pop-culture, movies, books, TV, everything.  So without further ado here is Mike’s first piece for our site. I already  have one more of his articles ready to post and we’re very happy to have him writing for us.  I think you guys will love his point of view.   Below his article I just posted a link to his website. Enjoy!

How to Treat Source Material by Michael Cole

When something is adapted into a movie, there is inevitably some complaint about source material. Whether it’s a video game, a book, a comic book, or a TV show, someone is going to be unhappy. It’s inevitable.
Currently, the problem tends to be that something doesn’t follow the source material close enough. It’s a natural complaint, after all if you were a fan of the original thing, then you want to see it adapted well, but is it a fair to expect a literal translation of page to screen?
I think it depends, and I don’t mean it depends on the specific work it’s based on, as much as I mean what the original format was. Look at a finite book series, like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson; there are 7 Harry Potter books, telling one overarching story, there are 5 Percy Jackson books (plus 5 where he’s a semi-main character, plus 5 where he’s a background character). Both of the series have pretty defined beats that lead to their ending in the final book, so they should be pretty close to the original source material, at least in those beats. Harry Potter does a pretty good job of this, cutting some of the fat that isn’t needed, but overall sticking to the same structure. Percy Jackson got two movies (of 5 books) and by the end of the second book, there was a battle which was essentially the final battle from book 5. By doing this, they had predetermined that even if it had been successful enough to warrant further movies, that they wouldn’t be able to continue following the story that had been laid out for them.
I think a finite series, should adapt the basic bones of the original, but an ongoing serial, something which has the mythology being rewritten constantly, has much less responsibility to strictly following the source material. We’re seeing this with comic books, they’ve been restarting, and reinventing, and reimagining the stories and the worlds, and so when it comes time to adapt them into films and TV shows there is a wealth of source material, but sometimes its contradictory, so in this way sticking with the spirit of the characters and their arches tends to be paramount, and making sure that any element that has remained untouched through all the various adaptations and updates isn’t changed (at least without VERY good reason). It’s well established that Joe Chill killed Bruce Wayne’s parents, in every variation except for Tim Burton’s Batman, in which Jack Napier killed them before becoming the Joker. While there was some disagreement about changing it, ultimately it made no impact on the ongoing storytelling in the overall Batman catalog, but allowed that films story to have the proper impact without shifting too far from source material.
What is interesting about film adaptations is, that if you look at them before a certain point (I tend to think of Harry Potter as being the turning point) a significant amount of book to movie adaptations had significant changes to the source material. Look at a movie like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest based on the novel by Ken Kesey, (among many other hugely successful films adapted from books around that time) it took a starkly different approach from the book. In the novel, the whole story is told from Chief’s perspective, and as readers we have a hard time differentiating between what is real and what is hallucination. There are moments in the book to make it clear that the Chief does hallucinate, like when the beds each lower down as the floor opens up and all the sleeping people are experimented on by putting mechanical and electronic parts in them. In the movie, because the story is closer associated with McMurphy’s point of view, we see the ward as being filled with people who are mentally ill, but the view point of it is clear itself.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, is an example of a book that would have been unfilm-able as a literal adaptation, and that is where a lot of stand-alone literature falls. We naturally want to see a film adaptation, but not every book translates, whether that be due to technical constraints, or more hard limit medium differences (if Chief had narrated the film as heavily as he had the novel, he would have been talking nearly the entire movie.)
One of my favorite books, The Knife of Never Letting Go which is the first book in The Chaos Walking Trilogy, is being adapted into a film for release in 2019. The book takes place on a world where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts, including the animals. (I’m going to give no spoilers so don’t worry). The people refer to that concept as ‘Noise,’ as in your thoughts are your ‘Noise,’ and most people can hear everyone’s ‘Noise’. On the page, Patrick Ness, fills the page not only with what you need to know, but noise, words all over the pages a typography nightmare, and it makes for an incredible novel. We can ignore a lot of it visually, so we get the idea, but we’re not actually as overwhelmed as the characters. How is this going to work in the film? My hope is that they’re not going to be completely faithful to the novel. My hope is that they’ll find some other manner of conveying that, because— at least for me— ignoring audio noise will be too difficult and distract from the storytelling.
Ultimately, I think there must be a consistency whether it’s to the characters, or the concept, or in some cases it should tell the same story, but I think depending on what kind of source material you have, and what kind of film you’re going to make, you have to change things. You’re going to get some people mad, and those people will get frustrated with those who enjoy the new item, but a movie isn’t a comic book, or a book, or TV show, and the focus just has to be on the quality of the storytelling, and not an overwhelming reverence to an original in a medium that doesn’t tell stories the same way.

What do you think about adaptations and source materials? Do you prefer them to be perfect visual representations or are you ok with changing things as needed? Tell us in the comments below.
