PODCAST: Best Movies of 2021!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this episode, Big Paul Sr. and I look back at 2021 and discuss our favorite movies of the year! We planned on going over our favorite TV shows of 2021 as well, but as usual, things went off the rails pretty quickly. So, expect a new episode of the podcast, where we talk about our favorite TV/Streaming series of 2021. We will most likely have it posted sometime in the next week.

The format of The World’s Best Podcast has always been very informal and conversational. Which means, that sometimes, we don’t get to go over certain topics as much as I’d like. While we spent a decent amount of time discussing most of our favorite movies of the year, there were a few that got left out or under discussed. Which is why I decided to included my official Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2021 list in this article, that we mention on the podcast. I’d love to hear what movies resonated with you in 2021, so let us know in the comments below or on social media.

My Favorite Movies of 2021

  • The Suicide Squad
  • Nobody
  • Zack Snyder’s Justice League
  • Dune
  • Eternals
  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife
  • Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings
  • A Quiet Place: Part 2
  • Batman: The Long Halloween
  • Last Night In Soho

Some of you may be surprised to see that Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t make it onto the list. No Way Home is probably the biggest, most ambitious film to come out of The MCU, that isnt an Avengers movie. No Way Home has A LOT going on. I only saw it once and when I finally did, I was a little under the weather (Don’t worry, I’m not talking about COVID or anything like that. I would never be irresponsible enough to go to a movie, if I thought there was even a chance I was COVID positive). I have a feeling that, if I saw the film under better circumstances it would be in the Top 10. I didn’t feel comfortable including it on this list, until I see it again and decide where exactly I come down on Spider-Man: No Way Home. Anyway, enjoy this week’s episode of The World’s Best Podcast!

PODCAST: Last Night In Soho Review!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this episode of The World’s Best Podcast, Ryan and I review Last Night In Soho, the latest film from director Edgar Wright! A new Edgar Wright film is a big deal for all of us here at World’s Best Media. He’s best known for his iconic Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End.

Wright also directed the excellent Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Baby Driver. I love his entire filmography, but his last movie, Baby Driver, is one of the best movies of the last 20 years, in my opinion. Now, we have Last Night In Soho. So we were pretty damn excited going into this new film. As I said in our review for The Suicide Squad, like James Gunn, Edgar Wright easily makes it onto my list of The 10 Best Working Directors. So if Edgar Wright is writing/directing, you can bet your ass I’ll be watching.

Some thing Edgar Ray has in common with another one of my favorite filmmakers Quentin Tarantino is that the feature of fantastic music in all of their films. Wright and Tarantino are very close friends, and one night while discussing music Quentin brought up the band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. Their music was featured prominently in Tarantino’s movies, Death Proof. Quinton asked Edgar “Have you ever heard Last Night In Soho”? Edgar said he hadn’t, Quentin played the song (by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich), and said ‘This is the best title music for a film that’s never been made.’”. The original titles for the film didn’t work because there had already been obscure movies made with the titles Edgar Wright wanted to use. He remembered te conversation with his old friend Quentin Tarantino and decided to call the film Last Night In Soho, the rest is history…

If you actually plan on seeing Last Night In Soho, I definitely recommend going to watch the film for yourself and then come back and listen to this episode. Because one of the great delights of the movie is how unique and unexpected it is, and that’s very rare at the movies these days! FULL SPOILERS in this episode!!!

PODCAST: The Suicide Squad Review! Full Spoilers!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this episode of The World’s Best Podcast, Tim Cuff and Ryan McDonald join me to review The Suicide Squad, the latest film based on the classic DC Comics series. Tim and Ryan are also the co-hosts of the hit podcast, Cuff’s Basement!

This episode is also particularly special because this was the first time we recorded a podcast in person, in well over a year because of the pandemic. We were recording all of our episodes through our devices, so just physically getting together to do a new show felt great.

This movie had a huge advantage right out of the gate, because its directed by the amazing James Gunn. James Gunn is the twisted mind behind both Guardians of The Galaxy movies Slither starring Nathan Fillion, Super, and more. He easily makes it onto my list of The 10 Best Working Directors, his name one the project alone was enough to get me excited for The Suicide Squad. If James Gunn is directing, you can bet your ass I’ll be watching.

The Suicide Squad also acts as a soft reboot of the abysmal 2016 Suicide Squad. A few characters that appeared in the 2016 film return for this installment, like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnamen as Rick Flagg. While 2021’s The Suicide Squad doesn’t directly contradict the 2016 film, it’s clear that everyone involved wants us to forget it ever happened.

Whenever I get together with Ryan and Tim, we always have blast recording a show. We hope you guys enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making the episode!

Huge News! Warner Bros Will Be Releasing All Major Films In 2021 Simultaneously In Theatres & on HBO Max !

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Streaming platforms like Netflix have drastically changed the way we consume entertainment over the last decade. For quite some time, I believed that streaming was the future of the film and television industry. Last week Warner Bros. made the monumental announcement that Wonder Woman 1984, one of their biggest upcoming releases, would be debuting simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max on Christmas Day. Subscribers to HBO Max will even be available to watch the movie free. This announcement was a very big deal, that sent shock waves throughout the film industry. The coronavirus outbreak has destroyed so many businesses and industries over the last year, with movie theater chains being hit particularly hard.

If a vaccine for the coronavirus becomes approved for public use in the next few weeks, the earliest the movie theater industry could expect to see any kind of bounce back, would be early summer 2021. With so many projects already finished, in the can, ready to be viewed by audiences, it was only a matter of time before a major studio made a move like this. Most people expected Disney+ to do something like this with Marvel’s Black Widow, while nothing has officially been announced yet, I think this move all but confirms that we’ll see Black Widow on Disney+ sooner rather than later. The point is that for awhile now, we’ve been heading towards a world where the way we watch movies will fundamentally change. The fact that Warner Bros. chose Wonder Woman 1984 to be the film to test the new format was a clear signal that they were taking streaming more seriously than they ever had before. This wasn’t some random film, this was the is the sequel to what is arguably the most successful DCEU superhero film. All the while Disney has been making it very clear that they plan to invest a lot of money and resources into the success of Disney+ and streaming. The current leadership of the company has seen streaming as a new gold rush (and that was before COVID-19 crippled the country).

Dune based on the classic sci-fi novel

Which brings me to my main point, today is the day movie industry has been fundamentally and forever changed. Warner Bros. announced today that all of their upcoming 2021 film slate will be available on HBO Max the same day as they’re released in theatres. The company is making sure to emphasize that the films will premiere on HBO Max and in theaters on the same one same day. While some theaters are open and partially operating in the U.S. right now, the main reason for emphasizing a duel streaming and theatrical release, is because many international markets don’t have access to certain streaming service yet. Another factor at play is how the international market, where people are physically going to see films in movie theatres more often. Mainly because most of these countries have the coronavirus under control in a way that the United States does not. Even though, as I mentioned before, Wonder Woman 1984 will be free to HBO subscribers, I am certain that an additional fee will be charged for all of these future releases Warner Bros. has planned for the platform in 2021 which includes 17 major titles such as The Matrix 4, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel Dune, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, Godzilla Vs. Kong and more. One thing is for certain, it cannot be understated how much of a game changer this is for virtually every aspect of the filmmaking industry.  Take a look at this promo trailer:

I’ve always found the inherent dichotomy in the movie industry fascinating. Half of it creatively motivated and the other half motivated by The Almighty Dollar. First and foremost, movie studios are businesses. Just like any other company, the point is to make money. However, in this case, their products happen to movies. The best filmmakers are incredibly passionate about storytelling and the art of film.  Occasionally, movie studio executives bump heads with directors on set. Executives worry about the bottom line and the filmmaker is worried about the quality of the storytelling in their film. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens enough for people to notice it every now and again. Telling a great story and making a lot of money, don’t always gel together well.

Because there’s so much money dumped into any given blockbuster, studio executives occasionally give directors “Notes”, which are suggestions, or demands, from the film studio to their directors, that certain changes be made to their movies. “Studio Notes” are often misguided attempts by studio execs who aren’t talented or creative storytellers, trying to influence a film to appeal to the widest possible audience. Executives at these companies don’t think like artists, which is why so many films that are heavily affected by studio interference, turn out pretty shitty. Creative people and business motivate people are basically antithetical to one another.

James Gunn’s sequel to Suicide Squad

I brought this up to illustrate that the people who run film studios only care about the facts, how can they have a successful financial year? So making this kind of move, with this slate of major, high profile major films, seems to indicate all that Warner Bros. doesn’t expect movie theaters to bounce back to any kind of  normalcy until fall or winter 2021, at the earliest. In a statement by Warner Bros, The company said that when it is completely safe for people to gather together in a movie theater they, plan on re-embracing the movie theater if you need experience. But the question is, at that point will audiences even want to go back to the old ways? I can think of a lot of reasons why I’d rather watch certain films at home rather than in a theatre filled with people You can be sure we will follow this story as it continues develop…

So, what do you think about this move by Warner Bros and HBO Max? Do you like the idea of watching the latest big movies from the comfort of your own home? Or perhaps you enjoy the movie going experience? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

We got a look at nearly every upcoming major DC project on the horizon across all major mediums (film, television, comic books, and video games, etc). In case you didn’t get a chance to see any of these awesome panels for yourself, Ive taken the liberty of getting all the goodies, the best stuff from DC FANDOME, and compiled them here for your viewing pleasure. I’ve posted all of the trailers, posters, and behind the scenes videos that were shown during today’s DC FANDOME event. The Flash:

The Flash hasn’t begun filming yet, so there wasn’t much new content to show the audience. It’s already been announced that Ben Affleck is returning to the role of Batman for this film, which will also see the return of fan favorite Michael Keaton’s classic version of The Dark Knight. The film is expected to be heavily influenced by the classic Flash story, Flashpoint. Time travel and alternate realities are big parts of that story and according to the director, The Multiverse is a major component of the movie. Which is how we have two different versions of Batman in the same film. The panel did showcase this cool concept art below that shows the new version of The Flash’s costume as he fights alongside Batman. As explained on the panel, like Tony Stark in the Marvel films, apparently this new suit upgrade will be courtesy of Wayne Enterprises, some thing built by a Batman specifically for Barry Allen. The director (who previously directed It: Chapter One & Two) described the suit as more “organic“ than the previous design. Take a look…

.

Gotham Knights (the long rumored new installment in DC’s popular series of Batman video games). Coming to PS4 & PS5 in 2021:

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League (A New Video Game available on PS4 and PS5):

The Flash: Season 7 (The CW):

Holy shit! A lot of new and amazing DC content dropped during their DC FANDOME event. This is great for DC fans because, as you can se, all of theses projects looked fantastic!

DC FANDOME Event Streaming Free for 24 Hours!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Beginning at 1 PM EST today, DC will be launching a massive online streaming event called DC FANDOME. The free, 24 hour “experience” will feature panels for some of DC’s biggest upcoming projects. They’ve  been gearing up for this for months, so we should definitely expect to hear some big announcements at the various panels. Some of the most notable segments, Wonder Woman 1984, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad,  The Snyder Cut of Justice League and many more will all be making presentations to fans. WW 84, Batman, The Snyder Cut, and The Suicide Squad are arguably the most high profile, so those are the panels that have most excited to see.

DC FanDome is just about movies, DC‘s comic books and graphic novels, as well as some of their biggest and best TV shows. The Flash, Titans, and the upcoming new Arrowverse series, Superman & Lois, will all be part of the streaming event. This is a fascinating and ambitious move by DC. It’s a smart way to bring in new fans, while giving current fans something to get excited about.

DC has out right confirmed that we’ll definitely see new trailers, never before seen clips from their upcoming films and TV shows. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got our first real look at footage from The  Batman or James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad.  DC even has one or two surprise panels scheduled, that they’ve somehow managed to keep secrets from rabid fans.

Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made some official announcement about Ben Affleck returning as Batman and in what capacity. Maybe Henry Cavill will show up to announce Man of Steel 2? Both are pretty reasonable possibilities, but who knows? I’ve only touched on a few scheduled showcases. This is definitely a must watch for any DC fan.

When you go to the DC FanDome website, you’ll see that the different panels and presentations are broken up into categories, so there really is something for everyone over the whole 24 hour. And they will be holding encore presentations of their biggest panels later in the evening. If you’re interested, but somehow unable to watch it tomorrow, there will be a on-demand style encore experience on September 12. Here’s the link to check it out yourself…
