We’re about a month and a half away from the premiere of Amazon Prime’s new series, The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. This show doesn’t exist in the same continuity as the Peter Jackson’s films. This is it’s own thing, taking place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy. This will be really an interesting project to keep an eye on, regardless of how excited you are for the show itself. The entire project has been met with a mixed reception from fans. This is also the most expensive television show ever made. Amazon’s not gonna run out of money anytime soon, but if this doesn’t connect with audiences, the streaming service is going to take a massive monetary hit. I certainly won’t be crying any tears for Jeff Bezos, he’s more of human shaped, pile of dog diarrhea, stuffed into a $10,000 suit than an actual human being. You can be damn sure that when one his companies loses money, it’s the people lowest on the totem pole that pay the price. I won’t tell you what I think of The Rings of Power just yet, so you watch the trailer below and decide for yourself. Take a look…

Here’s the official series synopsis from Amazon:

Right from the jump, there’s already at least one thing I love about this adaptation of Tolkien’s work: The Orcs. From what I’ve seen so far, I love how The Orcs look in this . Peter Jackson is a tough act to follow, but I love that they went 100% practical with The Orcs for this series. No CGI. Which led them to some fantastic designs. They’re unmistakably Orcs, but they’re just different enough from Peter Jackson’s versions, to The Rings of Power to make The Orcs their own. Here are a few of my favorites…

FIRST LOOK: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever!

When The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man, each subsequent film was building towards 2012’s modern classic, The Avengers. When The Avengers proved to be a smash hit, it was clear that The MCU wasn’t going anywhere. As they continued to build their mythology, the characters I wanted to see on the big screen more than any others were Doctor Strange and Black Panther. When they finally made their debut in The MCU, they didn’t disappoint. There’s still so much to look forward to in the comics.

T’Challa has an amazing rivalry with Namor The Submariner, The King of Atlantis (Basically Marvel’s more villainous version of Aquaman). Seeing a conflict between the two characters play out was high on the list of things I wanted to see come to life in The MCU.

I’m still unsure exactly how Marvel is going to handle Black Panther after Chadwick Boseman’s tragic and untimely death. I’m fairly certain it’s been stated that Marvel Studios doesn’t plan on killing off the character in The MCU. The sequel to Black Panther, titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to premiere in November. It looks like the plan is to shift the focus to the ensemble supporting cast from the first movie like T’Challa’s sister Shruri, Okoye The Head of The Dora Milaje, Nakia, a Wakandan spy and T’Challa’s former love interest, and M’Baku, leader of The Wakandan Mountain Tribe. This official promo art from the upcoming film shows how, both Shuri and Okoye will appear in the movie.

I’ve always maintained that Marvel should have waited a respectable amount of time and then recast the character. These characters are bigger than one actor who inhabits them. As much as we would love to see Chadwick Boseman in the Black Panther costume again, he’s in his family has come out to say that Chadwick would want the character to continue on after his passing. After speaking to Boseman’s brother, Derrick, TMZ reported “…Chadwick knew the power of the character, and the positive influence it carries. Derrick says there’s so much power in seeing a Black king — especially in a superhero capacity, like in the Marvel flick — which has a huge impact on African-American youth.” It’s like saying we should never have The Joker appear on screen again because Heath Ledger died.

What’s bittersweet for me, is that the new films story seems to be about a conflict breaking out between Wakanda and Atlantis. Which is awesome, but if Marvel wants to tell that story, T’Challa should be a part of it.

Tenoch Huerta

Actor Tenoch Huerta has a large, but unspecified role in Wakanda Forever. Most sources say that Huerta is indeed playing Namor. The character rides the line between anti-hero and villain, so I assumed he was the Big Bad in Wakanda Forever. However, new promo material for the upcoming movie has me thinking the film will portray Namor in a more heroic light. New promo images and an official character description has revealed that another long time Atlantean Marvel villain is appearing in the movie. A powerful bad guy named Attuma. Take a look at the character design and the character description below.

“Attuma was born into the tribe of Homo mermanus who eschewed civilization to live as nomadic barbarians. For some unrecorded reason, Attuma was endowed with strength far surpassing that of his people. Nearing adulthood, Attuma learned of a prophesy, in the lost Atlantean Chronicles, of a conqueror who would take the empire of Atlantis by force. Believing he is that conqueror, Attuma has launched numerous attacks on the city of Atlantis and its regent Namor the Sub-Mariner.”

As apprehensive as I am about this film, I must admit that this sounds very exciting. Marvel is once again pulling back the curtain on an entirely new part of the rich tapestry that makes up The Marvel Universe. I’ve always said that Black Panther’s best adversaries are characters like Namor and Doctor Doom because they’re all kings. The best hero and villain dynamics occurt when the characters are reflections of one another. Being King of Wakanda is one of the most fundamental aspects of who T’Challa is. He feels great responsibility to his country and his people. He’s more than just a King, he’s a great leader.

So putting him up against somebody in the same position, who has gone down a darker path, makes for some incredible storytelling opportunities. I think Ryan Coogler is a fantastic director, and he certainly has an absolutely stacked cast to work with. The first Black Panther film was excellent, Marvel knows what they’re doing. Hopefully, sometime in the near future, Marvel Studios will come to their senses and give us a new T’Challa/Black Panther. Not just for the fans, but to also honor the legacy of Chadwick Boseman and the character we saw him create and bring too life. As I mentioned before, from what I’ve heard, the character of T’Challa is not being killed off, so it will be interesting to see how they handle his absence. Almost the entire cast of the first film is returning for Wakanda Forever, not to mention that Wakanda itself is such a cool and unique setting, that it’s almost a character in its own right, so the filmmakers definitely have a lot to work with here. Every time I’ve had serious doubts about a decision Marvel Studios under Kevin Fiege has made, I end up eating my words. Hopefully that streak will continue and this will be the spectacular sequel that Black Panther deserves!

The Greatest Comic Book Super Hero Punches Ever Thrown!

Few years back, Reed Richards formed The Future Foundation. A school in the Baxter Building for a handful of brilliant, unique, and gifted children. I’m sure this sounds familiar, but Xavier and The X-MEN have mutants covered (though there happen to be a couple of mutants in The Future Foundation, like Reed’s son Franklin). As part of one of their school projects, the kids came up with a way to make Ben Grimm revert to his human form for one week, every year for the rest of his life. Though the kids Felt bad that they couldn’t come up with a way to make the transformation longer than one week each year, Ben was elated. A few years later, Ben marries his longtime girlfriend Alicia Masters. They make sure to time their Hawaiian honeymoon perfectly, so they’ll have as much time as possible together while Ben is in human form. The change arrives at the same time every year, Ben doesn’t have any control over when it happens. So it’s a very inconvenient time for a bloodthirsty Hulk to show at Ben and Alicia’s honeymoon resort, when Ben is only minutes away from turning back into a human. Though there’s always been a rivalry between The Hulk and The Thing, we later learned that The Hulk is being mind controlled by Alicia‘s lunatic stepfather and Fantastic Four villain, The Puppet Master. The Hulk and Ben engage in arguably their most vicious and brutal battle. Time is running out and the fights doesn’t seem to be going Ben’s way. With only seconds to spare, and the life of the woman he loves on the line, Ben musters up every ounce of heart and strength he has left, to deliver the punch of the century. Knocking The Hulk out cold. Unfortunately for Ben, the crisis may have been averted, but he was so badly injured in the fight, that by the time he wakes up, his week as a human for the year has come and gone. Much to his chagrin, he’s reverted back to his rocky, Thing form. At least he still has Alicia and there’s always next year.

“ONE PUNCH!” Batman lays out GL Guy Gardner with one, almost effortless punch, after professional dickhead Garnder gets angry, picks a fight with Batman, and says he can take Batman anytime, anywhere. It doesn’t go Guy’s way, too say the least.

This is actually the first “in continuity” fight between The Dark Knight Detective and The Man of Tomorrow. While wearing a Kryptonite ring, Batman delivers a devastating punch to Superman’s face, fending off an attack by The Man of Steel, while he’s under the control of Poison Ivy. It’s often said that, with prep time, Batman could defeat nearly any opponent. This fight is a great example of Batman getting caught totally off guard for a confrontation he is absolutely not ready for. Yet, using the tools he has on hand, his tactical knowledge of his opponent and his environment, The Dark Knight is able defeat (or at the very least bring the fight to a draw) one of the most powerful beings on Earth. To quote the great Superman himself, in a different comic book…

Batman never liked or trusted Hal Jordan and the feeling was mutual. In the Justice League, Batman, a mortal in a room full of gods, calls the shots. His authority among the heroes is almost always respected. On the very rare occasions when its isn’t, he doesn’t like it one damn bit. Hal Jordan never bought in to Batman’s bullshit and wasn’t afraid to let him and everyone else know it. With the fate of the universe at stake, Earth’s Green Lantern’s needed to take action. When a distrustful Batman attempts interfere, Hal Jordan decks him and lays him out, with a shocked Guy Gardner exclaiming “ONE PUNCH!”. A little poetic justice for Guy Gardner. Gardner may be a horse’s ass, but Batman can be a real prick. He isn’t occasionally called “The Dick Knight” for nothing. Batman deserved this humbling punch in the face.

Honorable Mention:

Alfred Beats The Living Shit Out Of Superman (Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One) W. Tom Taylor

In the Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year One storyline, a horrific tragedy pushes Superman into becoming a tyrannical dictator, ruling Earth with an iron fist. Some heroes side with him and others join a resistance against Superman’s regime led (naturally) by Batman. In a move that could turn the tide of the war, Batman develops a pill that can give normal humans superpowers (super strength, invulnerability, etc.). Superman manages to corner Batman in the Batcave, before Bruce can take the pill. Superman begins top brutally torture his one time friend. Superman stops when someone puts a hand on his shoulder, he looks up to see Alfred Pennyworth standing over him, who has just taken the superpower pill. Alfred proceeds to give Superman a lesson in exactly what will happen to anyone, be they god or man, who fucks with his family.

Alfred doesn’t let Superman off the hook with a simple brutal beating. He gathers up the injured Bruce and make their way to the teleporter in The Batcave, to make their escape. But not without throwing one final sick burn Superman’s way, to make it crystal clear exactly what Alfred’s opinion of the Man of Steel has become.

COOL CHARACTER POSTERS & MORE – Thor: Love & Thunder!

It’s funny how things come full circle. Way back in the early days of The MCU, when the first Thor movie was about to hit the big screen, the Thor comic book was one of my favorite series. Written by Jason Aaron, with gorgeous art by creators like Esad Ribic and Russell Dauterman, their Thor run is already a modern classic. Without a doubt, my favorite work on the character. Which is high praise because their have been some absolutely killer Thor stories over the years.

2011’s Thor had just been released and I remember thinking: “Gorr The God Butcher would be such a cool villain to see in a Thor movie! But that’s never going to happen.”. Oh, young and naive Paul…

Peter Quill and the rest of The Guardians of The Galaxy will be joining Thor on his latest adventure.

Now we live in a golden age of comic book films! Where some of the most bizarre, bat-shit crazy characters and concepts are given the spotlight. Anything goes. The MCU dove head first into some of the most insane elements in rich history of Marvel Comics. 20 years ago, not even in the wildest dreams of comic book fans, would we have imagined seeing The Avengers, Rocket & Groot, Wakanda, Doctor Strange and The Illuminati, fucking Moon Knight(?!), brought to life by some of the best actors and filmmakers in Hollywood. It still blows my mind that Thanos is a household name!

Now we’re just a few weeks away from the premiere of Thor: Love & Thunder. As I mentioned before about things coming full circle, Thor is now the only MCU hero with a 4th solo film. Not only is Gorr the movie’s antagonist, he’s also played by Christian Fucking Bale! Love & Thunder seem to be drawing heavily from Jason Aaron’s excellent Thor where I first met Gorr The God Butcher in the comics all those years ago. Jane Foster picking up Thor’s hammer in becoming her own version of The Mighty Thor was an enormous part of Aaron’s Thor magnum opus. I know some people have been turned off by this story development with Jane, but trust me, if it’s even half as cool as it is in the comics, it’s going to be fucking awesome. It’s important to note that Jane isn’t replacing Thor. She’s becoming A Thor, not THE Thor. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Odinson isn’t going anywhere.

Anyway as we look forward to the films released, Marvel has released some very cool new character posters for you guys to check out. Take a look below…

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK: Black Adam & The Sandman!

DC superhero films that have come out over the past several years have been a mixed bag to put it politely. However, there is reason to hope on the horizon. There has been a major shake up at Warner Brothers, the company that owns DC. They have a new head honcho. A man named David Zasla is the new Warners CEO nad he’s looking to make some big changes, for the better. First of all, they want to create an in-house DC Studios, so they can completely produce and create their own films. Like Marvel Studios has since the first Iron Man movie in 2008. He’s already been cleaning house DC Entertainment. Cancelling several TV shows and projects that don’t work or have long overstayed their welcome. Change can be a very good thing in a situation like this and the slate of films coming down the pipe from DC are pretty exciting.

BLACK ADAM

One project that I’m most looking forward to is Black Adam, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character. Warner Bros./DC have just dropped a new trailer, so let’s take a closer look…

Black Adam is a fantastic character. Not somebody easily classified as a hero or a villain. More of an anti-hero. But a great character nonetheless. While I don’t think this is a particularly spectacular trailer, the first teaser was much, much better, I was already sold on this film and I think there’s a lot of reasons to be optimistic about this movie.

Because Black Adam rides that line between villain and anti-hero, I love how the “antagonists” of the movie are the superheroes Teth-Adam (his real name) faces off with in the comics. It’s a brilliant reversal on the hero/villain dynamic that we haven’t quite seen before in a superhero film. The superheroes in question are The JSA or Justice Society, the team that bump heads with Black Adam most frequently.

It’s a really cool line up, too! With Pierce Brosnan playing Dr. Fate, along side characters like Hawkman (played by Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher, and Cyclone. I even think the JSA character designs are done very well. In fact, Black Adam looks spot on as well. Based on what I’ve seen in the trailers so far, I really dig the film’s aesthetic.

It should also be noted that Black Adam has major ties the character Shazam/Billy Batson. 2019’s SHAZAM! was one of the better DC movies to hit theaters over the last few years. Shazam and Black Adam are large parts of each other’s mythologies. If the upcoming sequel, SHAZAM!: Fury of The Gods, is a success, we should expect these characters to cross paths in the near future. In fact, I’ll be surprised if Black Adam doesn’t feature a cameo or some other major reference to Shazam. I’m really intrigued to see how it’ll all play out on the big screen. THE SANDMAN

Next up, we have the new trailer for the upcoming Netflix series based on Neil Gaiman‘s The Sandman! The Sandman is by far one of my absolute favorite comic books of all time. It’s a story that I find myself coming back to over and over again. I tend to re-read it every few years and I always discover something new in the story that I didn’t notice before. It’s a true masterpiece of the medium. I knew that The Sandman series was premiering in 2022, they already dropped a teaser trailer, but I thought it was odd that we hadn’t heard anything else about a specific release date. No behind the scenes footage or other promotional material. Well, now we have an official trailer to announce the release date, confirming a 2022 release. The trailer reveals we’re going to be seeing it much sooner rather than later, premiering August 5th on Netflix.

It’ll be very interesting to see how this show plays out. It seems to be both a very faithful adaptation, taking images straight off the page, while also deviating from the comic in some other major ways. Which is fine, in fact most times, it’s a good thing. Often, it’s the best way to tackle a project like this. When adapting something from one medium to another, some things that work on the comic book page don’t always work on screen, necessitating changes in the translation. I think the important things like the actor cast in the role of Morpheus AKA Dream of The Endless AKA the titular Sandman, Tom Sturridge, seems perfect for the role. The visuals seem spectacular and the tone appears to be spot on. So I’m optimistic. However, I have a feeling this is either going to be brilliant, or kind of a big let down. I don’t have any particular reason to believe that, it’s more just an instinct. Hopefully I’m way off and this is going to another wonderful adaptation of one of Neil Gaiman’s most wonderful creations. Anyway take a look at the trailer for yourself below and step into the world of The King of Dreams…

NEW TRAILER – Thor: Love & Thunder!

Wow, this brings me back. Another milestone! With this being the 5 Year Anniversary of World’s Best Media and The World’s Best Podcast, the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok was one of my first posts ever! As we move into June, we have some exciting anniversary content planned, so stay tuned! Anyway on to Thor: Love and Thunder…

The new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder has dropped! This looks so cool. I love Christian Bale as Gorr The God Butcher, Natalie Portman looks great as “The MIghty Thor”. Gorr The God Butcher, Jane wielding Mjonir as ”The Mighty Thor”, and several other visual and story elements seem to indicate that this film is drawing heavily from the work of Marvel writer, Jason Aaron. In fact, one of the images seen in the trailer is pulled straight from an issue of Thor: God of Thunder, which featured the Gorr The God Butcher storyline, written by Jason Aaron with art by Esad Ribic, as you can see below.

Which only makes my more excited, because Aaron’s 7-year Thor run is by far my favorite work done on the character. This one is gonna be really good. Check it out…

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK – The Boys: Season 3! She-Hulk: Attorney At Law!

We have a couple of pretty cool trailers this week, with the new trailer for Season 3 of AmazonPrime’s The Boys, as well as our first look at the upcoming MCU Disney+ series, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law! Both trailers a very exciting for their own reasons, but check them out below and then we’ll get into some interesting details about these upcoming shows…

The Boys: Season 3

At this point, what more is there to say about The Boys? We already know the show is fantastic and I have no doubt that the new season will deliver just as much, if not more, than the previous seasons. I love seeing Homelander beginning to seriously go off the deep end. It looks like Maeve is beginning to proactively work against Vought a bit more, which is interesting. It seems like Hughie has some level of authority over Butcher now. Which led the great line from Mallory (their old boss) to Butcher ”You’ve even started taking Hugh Campbell’s orders without strangling him.”.

However, there was one thing problem I had that was on display in the trailer. In the comics, The Boys using something similar to Compound-V to level the playing field against the supes, is introduced fairly early in the series. So I didn’t really like M.M.’s sanctimonious “you’ve become the thing you hate! Blah, blah, blah“ schtick. If you’re going up against enemies with the power of gods, a move like this seems inevitable. So hopefully, that’s not a major subplot and this becomes a tool that The Boys use on a semi-regular basis when they need it .

Then, of course, the other big deal in Season 3 that has a lot of people excited, is Jensen Ackles joining the cast as Soldier Boy. We see much more of him in this new trailer and goddammit, he looks pretty damn cool. I feel like he’s going to be the wild card of the season. He’s the X factor. He doesn’t seem to be towing the Vought company line, but he doesn’t seem like a guy who’d necessarily become a straight up ally to Butcher and The Boys either. So it will be really interesting to see how his character is used and how his story plays out over the season. Ackles is a talented actor with a lot of range and I think he’s going to get a lot of attention with this role. The premiere can’t get here soon enough!

The Boys Season 3 begins streaming on PrimeVideo June 3rd.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

While I’ve always liked the character of Bruce Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters, I was surprised how much I loved the trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. The tone feels exactly right for a show like this and I thought She-Hulk’s character design really worked (I’ll get to the CGI/VFX in a minuet).

Let’s not forget some of the interesting familiar faces who show up in the trailer. It’s great to see Tim Roth back as Emil Blonsky a.k.a. The Abomination. We last saw him in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, taking on Wong in a superhuman cage fighting tournament and it appears as if he’s been, at least a little bit, rehabilitated. Because after the fight in Shang-Chi, in the locker room he and Wong are clearly friends. Wong then opens a portal and walks through with The Abomination into a room that appears to be the same one that we see Tim Roth being kept in, in this new trailer.

Of course, I’ll take any excuse to see Mark Ruffalo pop up as Bruce Banner/The Hulk (some of you may disagree, but I love that he’s still in Professor Hulk-mode). Not to mention the persistent rumors that this is where we’ll see Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil again after his official re-introduction into the main MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Considering that Matt Murdock is a lawyer and this series is dealing with the creation of a superhuman law division, it makes a lot of sense for the character to make an appearance.

Something important to keep in mind when watching this trailer, is how on projects like this, the visual effects are continuing to be worked on and perfected up to the last moment. So while some of the She-Hulk rendering may not have been pitch perfect, the special effects wizards working on the show have literally months to perfect the process. I have no doubt that when the show premieres, we will have an impressive looking She-Hulk.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premieres on Disney+ August 13th.
