COMIC-CON 2022!!! Marvel Studios! DC! The Sandman! & Much More!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

*EDITOR’S NOTE: A lot of interesting content was revealed at this year’s COMIC-CON, so I’ll be updating this page with new content over the next several days.

Its that time of year and Comic-Con is upon us once again! This the venue where audiences get a sneak peek at some of the most exciting and anticipated projects in the superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. There were quite a few notable announcements, trailers, and first looks, so let’s dive right in!

MARVEL STUDIOS

After The Infinity Saga came to a close, fans have been eager to see where The MCU would go next. The head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Fiege, did not disappoint. As we’re heading towards the end of Phase 4, Marvel debuted the films and Disney+ shows that would make up not only Phase 5, but Phase 6 as well!

As you’ll notice, not all of the films and TV shows that make up Phase 6 have been revealed. Some of these projects could hidden beceause even their title would spoil certain surprises that Marvel has in store. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some of those spots taken up by sequels for characters like Shang-Chi and Doctor Strange or even an X-Men related project. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a film about the main Marvel Universe version of The Illuminati or even a Doctor Doom solo movie. We’ll have to wait and see. Like The Infinity Saga before it, Phases 4, 5, and 6 will collectively make up…

Culminating in not one, but TWO Avengers films, with monumentally exciting titles…

Exciting stuff, but there’s more MCU where that came from…

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania

The 3rd installment in the Ant-Man franchise marks the beginning of Marvel’s Phase 5. The big news in this movie is Jonathan Majors appearing as Kang The Conqueror. When we met He Who Remains, a much nicer variant of Kang, in Loki Season 1, we were warned that his variant’s are dangerous to put it mildly. When it comes to The Avengers’ the greatest foes, three names top the list: Thanos, Ultron, and Kang. Considering that the next Avengers movie is called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, you get the idea that Kang is as bad and as dangerous as they come. Jonathan Majors did a fantastic job of playing a variant of Kang in Loki Season One so I’m very excited to see what he does with a much more malevolent version of the character in this film. Below Marvel revealed an exciting poster for the upcoming movie, where you get a good look at not only Ant-Man and The Wasp, but Kang The Conqueror in his traditional comic book attire, along with Scott Lang’s daughter Cassie as her superhero alter ego, Stature.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3

While some of the Guardians of The Galaxy panel is available to watch on YouTube, the brief teaser James Gunn cut together for the audience in Hall H , hasn’t made it’s way online yet. However, there were some cool reveals, it was officially confirmed that the film’s villain will be The High Evolutionary. The character will be played by Chukwudi Iwuji. Earlier this year, Iwuji played Clemson Murn in the spectacular “Peacemaker” series. He made a hell of the entrance by taking a page out of Tom Hiddleston’s playbook and showing up for the panel in character and costume.

Chukwudi Iwuji on stage in Hall H as The High Evolutionary.

The High Evolutionary is Doctor Herbert Wyndham, a geneticist who specializes in creating human/animal hybrids. Rocket has been frequently referred to as the central character in Vol.3., so going on some sort of journey of self discovery to find his ”creator” or ”father”, makes a lot of sense. Many fans have speculated that The High Evolutionary would be revealed to be Rocket’s creator. This reveal seems to have confirmed this running fan theory.

Daredevil: Born Again

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio return as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in the first 18 Episode Disney+ series. Notably, Fiege referred to this as the show’s “First Season”, implying that this isn’t a one off, like WandaVision, for example. Born Again refers to one of Daredevil’s most iconic stories, however Season 3 of the Netflix Daredevil series was largely an adaptation of this classic Born Again storyline. Even if the Netflix shows aren’t completely considered canon in The MCU, I doubt Marvel would rehash a story that we’ve, mostly, already seen, canon or not. Especially with Cox and D’Onofrio returning. If i had to guess, I’d say this is probably a Civil War or Age of Ultron situation, adaptations in name only and vastly different from the source material. I think that’s the most likely situation with Daredevil: Born Again. Out of all the projects revealed at COMIC CON this year, this is the one I’m most excited about.

In this video, IGN does a great job of explaining what Daredevil’s future in The MCU looks like. Check it out:

TRAILER & MORE: Amazon Prime’s The Lord of The Rings: The Ring of Power! UPDATED WITH A NEW TRAILER!!!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

*Check Out The New Trailer Released For This Year’s SDCC At The Bottom Of The Page!

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky / Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone / Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die / One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne / in the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

We’re about a month and a half away from the premiere of Amazon Prime’s new series, The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. This show doesn’t exist in the same continuity as the Peter Jackson’s films. This is it’s own thing, taking place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy. This will be really an interesting project to keep an eye on, regardless of how excited you are for the show itself. The entire project has been met with a mixed reception from fans. This is also the most expensive television show ever made. Amazon’s not gonna run out of money anytime soon, but if this doesn’t connect with audiences, the streaming service is going to take a massive monetary hit. I certainly won’t be crying any tears for Jeff Bezos, he’s more of human shaped, pile of dog diarrhea, stuffed into a $10,000 suit than an actual human being. You can be damn sure that when one his companies loses money, it’s the people lowest on the totem pole that pay the price. I won’t tell you what I think of The Rings of Power just yet, so you watch the trailer below and decide for yourself. Take a look…

Here’s the official series synopsis from Amazon:

This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Right from the jump, there’s already at least one thing I love about this adaptation of Tolkien’s work: The Orcs. From what I’ve seen so far, I love how The Orcs look in this . Peter Jackson is a tough act to follow, but I love that they went 100% practical with The Orcs for this series. No CGI. Which led them to some fantastic designs. They’re unmistakably Orcs, but they’re just different enough from Peter Jackson’s versions, to The Rings of Power to make The Orcs their own. Here are a few of my favorites…

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power premieres September 2nd on Prime Video.

So what do you guys think? Are you excited for this new incarnation of Middle Earth? Let us know in the comments below!

UPDATE!: Checl out the new trailer released for this year‘s San Diego Comic-Con! In my opinion, much cooler trailer. This has me far more excited for the show then I was before. Take a look…

*WAIT! I almost forgot one more thing!!! I LOVE maps of fictional places. Whether it’s Westeros, Gotham City, or Middle Earth, don’t ask me why, but I love them. This map from the series shows the part of Middle Earth where The Rings of Power will be taking place. Pretty cool, right?

DC Comics has announced that legendary writer Grant Morrison will be taking over the Green Lantern book with artist Liam Sharp. The book will star Hal Jordan and focus on the idea of Hal Jordan as a “Space Cop”, with the story being like a space/sci-fi police procedural as opposed to the universe ending space epics of Geoff Johns’ run. DC has release some art from the new series which you can check out below.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Trailer

I have a love hate relationship with The Walking Dead. When the series started, I thought it was one of the best shows on TV, but signs of trouble started as early as season 2. As of last season I swore I’d never watch the show again. The show’s terrible writing constantly resorts to cheap tricks to keep the audience invested, lazy filler writing, and unnecessarily drawn out storylines. I have a theory that with any given season of The Walking Dead, all you really need to watch are the season premiere, the mid-season finale, the mid-season premiere, and the season finale. Everything else is filler. Having said all that, I think this is an intriguing trailer and we’ll have to see if I give in and watch the new season which premiers on October 10th. It’s also notable that this is Andrew Lincoln’s last season as Rick, the shows main character, so it may be intersting to see how this plays out on TV. Especially when Rick is alive and well in the comics. Check out the trailer below:

Young Justice: Outsider Trailer

I was a massive fan of this show, so i was ecstatic when it was announced that the series would be returning for a 3rd season. This is one of the big ones for me and I love what I’ve seen so far…

Iron Fist: Season 2 Teaser

Iron Fist was definitely off to a rocky start in it’s first season, but his character is on the upswing. He improved in The Defenders and we got by far the best version of the character yet when he teamed up with his old buddy Luke in Luke Cage Season 2. I wish this was Season 3 of Daredevil though. Because Iron Fist Season 2 premiers September 7th, it’s unlikely we’ll see a 4th Marvel Netflix show before the end of the year. However, with Typhoid Mary (played by Alice Eve), Davos AKA The Steel Serpent, and the show moving forward with Daughters of The Dragon, I’m cautiously optimistic that Season 2 could be the Iron Fist series we’ve all been waiting for.

Below is some cool artwork that accompanied the Season 2 announcement …

UPDATED:

Batman: Three Jokers

Famed DC Comics creator Geoff Johns has two big comic book projects that received some attention at one of Comic-Con’s DC Comics panels. First, is the announcement of Batman: Three Jokers. This is a project that was first teased a few years ago during the Justice League story arc The Darseid War in which Batman cryptically found out that there were in fact “three Jokers“. There’s been a lot of speculation as to what that means exactly, but apparently the book will focus on how The Joker (or Jokers?) has affected the lives of Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd, and Bruce Wayne specifically. There’s no official release date but the three issue miniseries will be drawn by Jason Fabok and debut later this year. This project has me nervous for a few reasons. First and foremost being, that under no circumstances should there be a DEFINITIVE Joker origin. By all means, hint and tease possibilities. Stories like The Killing Joke, Mask of The Phantasm, and Endgame have all alluded to POSSIBLE  origins and backgrounds, but nothing definitive. One of the coolest aspects of The Joker is that we have no fucking idea who he is. Outside of rumors or maybes it needs to stay that way. My other cause for concern, surprisingly is Geoff Johns himself. He’s easily one of my favorite and the best writers in the history of comics. But as he says himself, this is his first crack at writing a solo Batman story in continuity (his only other solo Batman work is Batman: Earth One).  Despite his undeniable genius at writing almost any other DC character, I often find myself disliking his portrayal of Batman. When he’s written Batman in team books or events, I feel he often writes the character in ways that ring false. He’s completely unlike every other character John’s has taken a crack at and I feel Batman’s the one DC character John’s doesn’t really understand. I don’t want a writer, even one as indisputably brilliant as Geoff Johns, who seems to lack a fundamental understanding of The Dark Knight, writing one of the most important Batman stories ever told. Hopefully I’m proven woefully wrong.792513D5-B6DA-4B41-9E3F-D0093928D574

Next we have a much lighter book, Geoff  Johns is returning to SHAZAM! this November. Dale Eaglesham is set to draw the monthly series

Fuck. Yes.

UPDATED (7/21):

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts movie, but I hated the reveal of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald (especially when they already had Colin Farrell which would have been an infinitely better choice). I will say it looks like Depp he’s doing something that I thought was impossible… reigning it in. He seems to be giving a much more subdued performance here and from the trailer I’m intrigued. I love the idea that this war in the wizard world made Dumbledore the famous wizard that he is. Plus, a world war of wizards during our World War II just sounds like a cool fucking story. I don’t want to forget to say Jude Law is perfectly cast as young Dumbledore. So despite my issues I’ll definitely be checking this one out. I have the trailer right here :

COMIC-CON 2017: New Trailer & Poster for the JUSTICE LEAGUE film!

UPDATED:

Here’s the mind blowingly cool COMC-CON trailer for JUSTICE LEAGUE! I can’t help, but get excited for this movie despite all the behind the scenes drama. Check out the trailer here:

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Hey, guys

Here’s a cool piece of promotional material out of COMIC-CON today. The new, very cool poster for JUSTICE LEAGUE. I like that it reminds me a lot of something the great Alex Ross would paint. I still have my fingers crossed that this movie will work out. Take a look at the poster below:

The poster for Justice League film, showing Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash.

COMIC-CON 2017: A look at BRIGHT & DEATH NOTE from NETFLIX

So, this week is the San Diego Comic-Con, which is always exciting because we get a look at all the cool new projects coming down the pipeline in film, television, comics, etc. We can usually look forward to new trailers for big movies and first looks at major projects in comics, TV, and film. There have already been a few cool panels that have shown some interesting trailers and other promotional material.
But the content Netflix has been promoting really caught my eye in particular. As we all know Netflix has become a powerhouse in television. They’ve basically become a new network with projects like Stranger Things, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and all the other Marvel series’s. Those examples are just the tip of the iceberg, they have a few very strong animated series as well, like Guillermo Del Toro’s Trollhunters. Now it looks like they’re making a serious play for producing their own original movies. Just like their television series, these movies will be made available streaming immediately at their premiere date. The two that I thought looked really intriguing and have the potential to be very cool were “Bright” starring Will Smith and “Death Note” based on the popular Manga. Here are the trailers for both:

These are two very different projects, but they have serious talent attached to both. The production values certainly look on par with what’s put out by the major film studios. Personally, both of these movies look right up my alley. I don’t want to get into a lengthy analysis of these trailers, but I really like the idea behind “Bright”. Telling a gritty, modern day cop story, in a world where orcs, elves, and magic exist sounds cool to me. But if it’s executed poorly it could be terrible. It’s directed by David Ayer who is very hit or miss, but Max Landis who wrote the script is a excellent writer despite his reputation.
I don’t know nearly as much about “Death Note”. I’m not familiar with the source material, but the trailer was very interesting. I’m not sure what his name is, but I’ve seen the lead actor in a number of films and I’ve always really liked him. And GOOD GOD Willem Dafoe looks creepy as FUCK as that fucking death god creature.
Anyway, I thought these were both interesting projects to keep an eye on. Hopefully Netflix will turn out to be as successful at making films as they are at making television shows. The more cool content the better as far as I’m concerned. “Death Note” premieres on Netflix on 8/25 and “Bright” premieres on 12/22. I’m sure there will be more stuff coming out of Comic-Con that I’ll want comment on either here or on the podcast so keep a lookout for that. As always, thanks for reading!
