FIRST LOOK: PlayStation 5 & More!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

It’s been a big week for Sony and their PlayStation 5 Game Console. First, up was the teaser trailer for what appears to be the sequel to PS4’s Spider-Man game. Which seems to be shifting its focus away from Peter Parker, to a story will revolve around Miles Morales, with the game new game titled Spider-Man: Miles Morales debuting on Sony’s upcoming PS5. Check out the trailer here:

It goes to show you how far gaming technology has come, that when my mother saw the picture posted below, she thought it was a real person. The graphics are incredible!

Then, after that pretty damn cool news, PlayStation dropped a bomb. After all the speculation, excitement, and rumors, Sony has finally revealed our first look at the PS5 console! Unfortunately, the two most important questions about the new console haven’t been answered yet: When is it coming out? And What will it cost? I have a feeling we will get an answer to both of those questions relatively soon, considering that Sony chose to unveil their console to the world. I’d expect a Holiday 2020 release date because that’s what Sony has indicated in the past and that’s the release date given in the announcement trailer for Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS5. However, the really interesting PS5 news is, that for the very first time, customers will have the option to purchase PS5 and its games completely digitally. Of course, this will not affect customer’s ability to purchase a physical copy. It’s just another option given to consumers when purchasing the system. It will probably come down to whatever work for each individual. Take a look at the video from Sony unveiling the new system:

It’s not 100% clear how this will work and what the advantages and disadvantage iwill be when it comes to choosing the physical console or the digital one. A major video game company has never done anything quite like this, so it’s a pretty big deal. It shows that the world is moving l more and more away from physical copies of media and even more into the world of digital.

Finally, this week sees the debut of The Last Of Us: Part II on PS4. The sequel to 2013’s The Last Of Us, which was a post-apocalyptic masterpiece. The first game was a beautiful piece of storytelling and character drama, that transcended both the genre and the medium.

2013’s The Last Of Us was a truly mind blowing experience and it looks like Naughty Dog, the company that produced both games, stepped up to the challenge of creating a worthy the sequel. The game is available everywhere on 6/19/20. You can check out IGN.com’s review of The Last Of Us: Part II right here:

A Look At The Upcoming Video Game: The Last of Us Part II

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

Like many other kids of my generation, I grew up playing video games on Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. However, by the time I got to high school, I rarely played and pretty much lost interest in video games. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking gaming, it’s just that, at the time, it wasn’t my thing anymore. One of my close friends kept gaming and every once in a while, he’d send me a cool video, like the cinematic teaser for one of the Batman Arkham games and I was always impressed. It was clear that gaming had made a big jump forward, but I was just intrigued more than anything else. I wasn’t exactly ready to dive headfirst back in to playing video games.

Not long after, the same friend of mine and I were meeting up with another group of people to grab dinner and I was supposed to meet my buddy at his place. I was a few minutes early and he was wrapping up playing one of the Uncharted games. I was completely blown away by what I was seeing. It was so incredibly cinematic, with 360° visibility, amazing rendering of characters and environments. The cherry onto for me was that it wasn’t just a game, but a real story with well developed characters. I’m sure this sounds stupid to a lot of you, but for me this is a quantum leap forward in video gaming. It felt like he was playing an Indiana Jones movie. I even remember the part of the game he was playing. It was (at least for me, at the time) a mind-bogglingly cool action sequence, involving Nathan Drake and some bad guys, on a cargo plane, with an open hold door, flying over the desert. I was sold. I never looked at videos games the same way.

I haven’t played as much as I’d have liked to over the last year, but there’s a new game coming out in a few weeks will definitely change that: The Last of Us Part II. The is sequel to, in my opinion, one of the best games ever created, The Last of Us. When The Last of Us came out on PS3, it was the best story, in any medium, of 2013. The best analogy I could use to describe The Last of Us, would be that it feels like you’re “playing” a movie and that doesn’t even do the game justice.

The Last of Us, from the video game developer Naughty Dog, tells the story of Joel, a bitter, cynical, middle aged man and teenage Ellie, as they make their way across a post-Apocalyptic United States. Of course, they have to contend with weird, zombie like creatures roaming the country. Oh, and our heroes have to deal with the worst monsters of all… other human survivors! Dah, dah, duhn! I’m sure this may sound like a cliched story you’ve heard too many times before, but The Last of Us is in a class all its own. I became more invested in the character’s of Joel and Ellie than the characters in the books I was reading or the movies I was watching that summer. If you’ve ever played the game, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was a masterpiece. A beautiful piece of art. Now, in just a few short weeks, we will get a chance to revisit Joel, Elle, and their broken, but not completely hopeless, world when The Last of Us Part II launches on 5/29/2020!

Now take a look at the new trailer below….

…And this really cool behind the scenes video from the creators of the game, as well:

DC Comics has announced that legendary writer Grant Morrison will be taking over the Green Lantern book with artist Liam Sharp. The book will star Hal Jordan and focus on the idea of Hal Jordan as a “Space Cop”, with the story being like a space/sci-fi police procedural as opposed to the universe ending space epics of Geoff Johns’ run. DC has release some art from the new series which you can check out below.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Trailer

I have a love hate relationship with The Walking Dead. When the series started, I thought it was one of the best shows on TV, but signs of trouble started as early as season 2. As of last season I swore I’d never watch the show again. The show’s terrible writing constantly resorts to cheap tricks to keep the audience invested, lazy filler writing, and unnecessarily drawn out storylines. I have a theory that with any given season of The Walking Dead, all you really need to watch are the season premiere, the mid-season finale, the mid-season premiere, and the season finale. Everything else is filler. Having said all that, I think this is an intriguing trailer and we’ll have to see if I give in and watch the new season which premiers on October 10th. It’s also notable that this is Andrew Lincoln’s last season as Rick, the shows main character, so it may be intersting to see how this plays out on TV. Especially when Rick is alive and well in the comics. Check out the trailer below:

Young Justice: Outsider Trailer

I was a massive fan of this show, so i was ecstatic when it was announced that the series would be returning for a 3rd season. This is one of the big ones for me and I love what I’ve seen so far…

Iron Fist: Season 2 Teaser

Iron Fist was definitely off to a rocky start in it’s first season, but his character is on the upswing. He improved in The Defenders and we got by far the best version of the character yet when he teamed up with his old buddy Luke in Luke Cage Season 2. I wish this was Season 3 of Daredevil though. Because Iron Fist Season 2 premiers September 7th, it’s unlikely we’ll see a 4th Marvel Netflix show before the end of the year. However, with Typhoid Mary (played by Alice Eve), Davos AKA The Steel Serpent, and the show moving forward with Daughters of The Dragon, I’m cautiously optimistic that Season 2 could be the Iron Fist series we’ve all been waiting for.

Below is some cool artwork that accompanied the Season 2 announcement …

UPDATED:

Batman: Three Jokers

Famed DC Comics creator Geoff Johns has two big comic book projects that received some attention at one of Comic-Con’s DC Comics panels. First, is the announcement of Batman: Three Jokers. This is a project that was first teased a few years ago during the Justice League story arc The Darseid War in which Batman cryptically found out that there were in fact “three Jokers“. There’s been a lot of speculation as to what that means exactly, but apparently the book will focus on how The Joker (or Jokers?) has affected the lives of Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd, and Bruce Wayne specifically. There’s no official release date but the three issue miniseries will be drawn by Jason Fabok and debut later this year. This project has me nervous for a few reasons. First and foremost being, that under no circumstances should there be a DEFINITIVE Joker origin. By all means, hint and tease possibilities. Stories like The Killing Joke, Mask of The Phantasm, and Endgame have all alluded to POSSIBLE  origins and backgrounds, but nothing definitive. One of the coolest aspects of The Joker is that we have no fucking idea who he is. Outside of rumors or maybes it needs to stay that way. My other cause for concern, surprisingly is Geoff Johns himself. He’s easily one of my favorite and the best writers in the history of comics. But as he says himself, this is his first crack at writing a solo Batman story in continuity (his only other solo Batman work is Batman: Earth One).  Despite his undeniable genius at writing almost any other DC character, I often find myself disliking his portrayal of Batman. When he’s written Batman in team books or events, I feel he often writes the character in ways that ring false. He’s completely unlike every other character John’s has taken a crack at and I feel Batman’s the one DC character John’s doesn’t really understand. I don’t want a writer, even one as indisputably brilliant as Geoff Johns, who seems to lack a fundamental understanding of The Dark Knight, writing one of the most important Batman stories ever told. Hopefully I’m proven woefully wrong.792513D5-B6DA-4B41-9E3F-D0093928D574

Next we have a much lighter book, Geoff  Johns is returning to SHAZAM! this November. Dale Eaglesham is set to draw the monthly series

UPDATED (7/21):

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts movie, but I hated the reveal of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald (especially when they already had Colin Farrell which would have been an infinitely better choice). I will say it looks like Depp he’s doing something that I thought was impossible… reigning it in. He seems to be giving a much more subdued performance here and from the trailer I’m intrigued. I love the idea that this war in the wizard world made Dumbledore the famous wizard that he is. Plus, a world war of wizards during our World War II just sounds like a cool fucking story. I don’t want to forget to say Jude Law is perfectly cast as young Dumbledore. So despite my issues I’ll definitely be checking this one out. I have the trailer right here :
