Movie Review: The Cloverfield Paradox

Hey, everybody

Paul here!

We knew a new Cloverfield film was coming in the near future under the title of “God Particle“ or “The god Particle“. But JJ Abrams in the folks over it Bad Robot surprised us all Super Bowl night with a trailer for their new film in the Cloverfield anthology titled “The Cloverfield Paradox”.  Even more surprising was the fact that the movie would be premiering immediately after the game on Netflix. I loved this and I thought it was a pleasant surprise. Even though the reveiws have been pretty negative, I must say I think  the movie is worth checking out. So please listen to my review of “The Cloverfield Paradox” below. At the very least the movie leaves the franchise with a lot of interesting directions to go in. I keep it spoiler free up until the 18 minute 30 second mark and from there I go full spoilers.  In case you’d like to revisit the previous two Cloverfield films below I have the Amazon affiliate links for Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane.  We appreciate anytime you use our Amazon affiliate link links because it helps support World’s Best Media. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the movie in the comments below. Listen here or subscribe on iTunes

PODCAST: The Films of Steven Spielberg (Part 2)

Hi everybody,

Paul here

On this episode of The World’s Best Podcast with Paul & Tim, we finish up our look at movies and career of Steven Spielberg. This is where we get into the real meat of it. The 90’s brought us a Spielberg at the top of his game, but more recently there’s arguably been a noticeable drop in the quality of his films. In our last episode, we left off talking about Indianan Jones and The Temple of Doom. On this week’s show we go through each of his movies after. If you‘re a Spielberg fan, hopefully you’ll end up wanting to revisit his classics after listening. Listen here or subscribe on iTunes:

Super Bowl Movie Trailers!!! (Updating)

Hey, everyone

If you’re like me one of the highlights of watching The Super Bowl is watching all the awesome new movie trailers. I’ll be updating this page as each new trailer comes out, so keep it here at World’s Best Media!

-Paul

UPDATE: The Cloverfield Paradox will be premiering on Netflix TONIGHT after the game! I love stuff like this. Great surprise.

UPDATE: I think Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Mission Impossible Fallout have been my favorite trailers so far.

UPDATE: After Solo I didn’t think we’d get another big trailer from Disney, but BOOM! Avengers: Infinity War! Not a lot to it, but I’ll take anything I can get when it comes to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

FINAL THOUGHTS: So we put another Super Bowl behind us. Regardless of your thoughts on the game, I thought we got a really strong showing for movie trailers. Better than I expected in fact. I didn’t think we’d get a look at both Avengers: Infinity War and Solo, which was a pleasant surprise. Like I said before I think Jurassic World and Mission Impossible: Fallout were the real standouts. Plus, we get a Cloverfield movie literally right now as a little gift from the folks at Bad Robot. I really like this “Twilight Zone-Anthology” vibe of these Cloverfield movies. I know I’ll be watching that tonight, so look for a review in the near future. Tomorrow morning we’ll have part 2 of our look at the career of Steven Spielberg on the latest episode of “The World’s Best Podcast with Paul & Tim” so make sure you check that out too. Thanks for following along with me tonight everybody!

-Paul

What I Want to See: Chadwick Boseman

Black Panther is coming out next week, and I really wanted to write a What I Want to See in honor of it, but the truth is, that Black Panther as a character was the MVP of the one Marvel movie he’s been in, has had one of the coolest trailers in the MCU, looks like he’s could be the MVP of Infinity War.  As a movie, Black Panther boasts one of the more exciting casts, and crews of any MCU film to date.  Ryan Coogler coming off of Creed to the MCU is an inspired choice. So I didn’t want to do a What I Want to See about Black Panther.  I have faith in this, and What I Want to See, is what they’ve got, I think it’s going to be amazing.

I first saw Chadwick Boseman in 42, as Jackie Robinson, and he was great in that film.  Then a year later, he was James Brown, and I haven’t seen that, but again he looked awesome in it.  Then we got to see him as Black Panther in Civil War, and he stole the show.  This last year, he played Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Marshall08124.RAF

He’s played 3 men who have been hugely important in the conversation of race over the last 70 years, and one of the most important fictional characters in the same area.  I really only know about these 4 roles, and I already consider Boseman to be a legend.

What I want to see, is Boseman get to play the big two.  The two big names we think of when we think of race in the last 70 years, I want to see him play Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.  I think that he has the acting chops, and I would love to see what he can bring to these two characters, and while it may sound ridiculous, I’d be interested in seeing him do both in the same film.

563e65d3c67fff1e4f0bf84a34f66ccf.1000x750x1

I think that it wouldn’t get taken seriously enough, but with two characters like that, two characters who we often think of as Yin and Yang, it would be really interesting to see what one actor can bring to both roles, to juxtapose them through one actor giving two performances.  I think the only man (at least right now) who could do that role, would be Chadwick Boseman.  I think he could give enough nuance to distinguish the two roles, and with make up they could make him look like two different people, and what we’d get would be something bizarre, but potentially really incredible.

We’re in a time where we’re seeing some very creative methods of telling historical stories.  Hamilton casts against historical race in order to show the spirit of America, we’ve seen time travel tell the story of JFK’s assassination and what his legacy may have been in 11.22.63.  We’re ready for something like this, and if you got someone with a really interesting direction style and Chadwick Boseman playing the leading roles, it could be amazing.  That’s what I want to see.

COMICS: More DC News! Superman & Brian Michael Bendis!

Art from the upcoming Action Comics #1000. Fuck the red underwear though!

This has been a big week for comic book news. Ever since comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis jumped ship from Marvel to DC, fans have been wondering what projects he’d be working on and what characters he’d be writing. Bendis has been one of the defining creators at Marvel for almost 20 years, with legendary runs on books like Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Avengers. During that time he created classic original characters like Jessica Jone and Miles Morales.

Now, DC has announced that starting in July, Bendis will take over writing the Superman books, Action Comics and Superman. Check out more of the art here:

B3218EAB-75CD-4B19-BD51-441A9838C9EB

According to IGN, Bendis will also be debuting a massive new villain with ties to Krypton’s past. I know some people won’t be on board for Bendis writing Superman, but I’ve always loved his work. My only complaint is that they brought back that fucking red underwear on his uniform. DC! I thought we were past this!!!

TRAILER: Ant-Man and The Wasp

Ant-Man is one of the most underrated MCU films. I think it’s easily the best stand alone “Origin” film (like Iron Man or Doctor Strange). Director Peyton Reed is returning and he said if the first movie is a “Heist Film”, the next movie would be a new genre. I’ve heard rumors that this movie will introduce the Mutilverse, like alternate Earths.  With new additions to the cast like Lawrence Fishburne, Walton Goggins and Michelle Pfeiffer this is definitely a movie to keep an eye on. Check out the trailer here, I can’t wait!

Big DC Comics News! Scott Snyder Announced As The New Writer For JUSTICE LEAGUE

30DB791E-CD21-43C5-8A75-53F5C68EC41E
Team: Entropy

Scott Snyder is probably one of the greatest comic books writers in the history of the medium. His run on Batman with artist Greg Capullo is already a modern classic and some of the best work ever done on the character.

ADA1A96C-EBBE-497F-B241-EB6FCA4676CD
Left to Right: Beast Boy, Lobo, Batman, Lex Luthor, Deathstroke

Following the release of artwork by Francis Manapul, DC announced that Scott Snyder will writing the flagship book for DC, Justice League.  Besides the incredible work he’s already done on characters like Batman, we’ve seen that Snyder has incredible talent working on almost any hero in the DC Universe. So this is something to be very excited about.  Though it wasn’t formally announced I suspect that Francis Manapul will be the artist on the main Justice League book that Snyder is writing, considering his art was such a large part of the announcement.

Team: Mystery
A1DB54A8-BC2C-4D67-B5FD-B1830AD1A677
Left to Right: Starfire, Superman, J’onn J’onzz, Sinestro, Behind them: (the weirdest damn inclusion) Starro The Star Conqueror

To kick off this new era for the JL, DC has also announced a 4 issue miniseries called Justice League: No Justice, that will set up the new status quo for Snyder’s Justice League bookThe miniseries will be co-written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV (Detective Comics) and Joshua Williamson (The Flash) with art by Francis Manapul. Issue #1 of that miniseries will be on sale 5/9.

DC unveiled artwork with a very diverse group of characters joining the League roster. It was a weird/awesome mix of classic Justice League members, villains, and younger heroes. There are a lot of cool possibilities with these characters. In fact each group of heroes was given subtitle to their team that I’ll include in the artwork captions. Apparently theses specific teams being brought together on separate missions, but with the same larger goal is  part of the story in Justice League: No Justice.

As a side note, Francis Manapul is one of the most talented artists in the business. His gorgeous art is always a huge draw for me on any comic he works on. His run on The Flash in particular is absolutely beautiful.

Team: Wisdom
F46E8113-E686-4C8B-9BDD-32E4769B08CF

This means there will probably be a few different JL books, each with a different focus. For example, one of the Justice League comics used to be called Justice League Dark and it featured all mystical based DC heroes like John Constantine and Zatanna facing supernatural threats. Writers James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson were named as co-writers of the miniseries with Scott Snyder, so I’d bet that they’ll each be writing a Justice League book, probably with a specific focus like space or magic or something. But once again, the thing to be excited about is Scott Snyder writing the flagship Justice League book which will be your “classic Justice League style”  adventures. Your Original Recipe Justice League, if you will

After Justice League: No Justice wraps up, Scott Snyder’s Justice League will hit shelves shortly after.  These are usually excellent times for new readers to jump on the comic book bandwagon. A miniseries like No Justice is usually designed to acclimate new readers to the status quo and they’re great jumping on points. Keep an eye out here as we’ll publish new info as it becomes available.

Are you excited for Scott Snyder’s Justice League comic book?

Out of the four teams  we see, which was your favorite?

Which team has the most  interesting combo of characters?

Let us know in the comments below!

I know I’m excited! Thanks for reading, everyone!

Time Travel in the Show Travelers on Netflix

I want to tell you all about a show that I’ve literally heard no one talking about, but I don’t want to spoil it.  So please bare with me.

The Netflix show Travelers, has some of the most compelling time-travel I’ve seen in a long time.  The premise, is that people are coming back from some far off, terrible future, in hopes of fixing it.  In that regard it’s pretty standard, but everything else really stands out for me.

6324ec72ae205334a3671af7bd64c85a-travelers-season-1

The travelers have their consciousness placed in the heads of ordinary people in 2016-2017 (there have been 2 seasons so far), at the moments before they were going to die.  The point of this being, that they’re not killing someone to make room, they’re just borrowing what would otherwise be an empty shell.  Without getting too into spoiler territory, this process doesn’t always workout for them, and that creates a lot of the interesting aspects of the show.  (I really want to tell you, but if I do I’ll be doing you a disservice).

The plot about saving the future, really takes a back seat, to the stories of the characters, who have to adapt not only to a world that they don’t recognize, but to roles and relationships they are thrust into by means of their “host’s” previous life.  One thing I will tell you, is that these characters come from a future in which famine has ravaged their food supply, and so any time a new ‘Traveler’ is brought into the show, they really explore their relationship with food.  It might not sound that interesting, but food, both the experience of tasting, as well as all of the addictive nature of modern food and sugar, show how they aren’t ready for, or able to adjust while eating in front of non-travelers.  It’s a small weakness in their ‘act’ that they all have to perform.

travelers_1

The show focuses on one team of ‘travelers,’ who work toward individual missions as they are assigned.  One of the things that I find really cool about the team, is that you have a leader, an engineer, a weapons expert, a medic, but also a historian, who has one of the coolest functions.  Essentially, the historian is in charge of remembering all the deaths and events in the area, so that they can go help new traveler’s transition, or look for differences that they may make in the time-line.  Philip, the historian, also has to face the idea that as they change the time-line he becomes less essential, and less helpful to their missions, which creates something of an existential crisis for him.

Ultimately, the characters learning that they can’t just travel back and accomplish their missions without lives interfering becomes the meat of the show.  Each character ends up with a particular set of challenges that were unforeseen from the future, and they have to adjust and keep going.

5df2174f49abf996839b4b6019398795

I’m only a few episodes into season 2, but the show remains really interesting in this perfect fusion of character and device. What I would suggest to you, is that you watch the first episode, which I consider to be one of the best first episodes I’ve ever seen.  It had me instantly hooked and wanting more.  That being said, I can’t really tell you anything about why I was hooked from the start without spoiling it for you.  I hope you enjoy.

Also, as a side note, and a shameless plug, if you’re looking for time-travel fiction, check out my new time-travel blog, which I’ve been working on since October.
