….Um… Well… Jesus Christ…

The pinnacle of modern filmmaking? Very likely. After watching this trailer I did a set of sick squats, blasted my pecs, drank 5 pints of Guinness, and ate a 42 ounce steak. This trailer is so MANLY, it made ME more manly.

New Trailer & Poster For SHAZAM!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

The folks over at DC and Warner Bros. must be feeling pretty damn good right about now. After years of attempting and failing to copy Marvel’s shared universe format, it finally seems like their superhero movies are on the right track. Wonder Woman was their first huge step in the right direction. Unfortunately, by the time Warner Bros realized Wonder Woman was a hit, production on the craptacular Justice League film was in full swing. I’m not quite sure what they could’ve done, but if production on Justice league had begun following the critical and commercial success of Wonder Woman, I think Warner Bros. probably would’ve tried to write the ship a little bit on JL.

7e1911c3-b2be-4cf1-bd7e-4a65f685220e

Anyway, you can’t change the past (Or can you?… Well… No, um, no. I don’t think you can… Actually, who’s to say?), so they went from the success of Wonder Woman, to the unavoidable speedbump of Justice League, and now they have another bona fide hit on their hands with Aquaman. A film which was both financially successful and generally well received by fans and audiences in general. However, the DCEU (I REFUSE to call it The Worlds of DC!) has another very big test coming up, their next movie: SHAZAM! (Yes, the exclamation point IS part of the title, not just for emphasis).

DC just released the second trailer for SHAZAM!, which I have posted below. As well as a few pretty cool posters (one at the top of the article and one below) and some stills and pictures from the film.

30cfd6d4-3d0d-4fa6-a5f1-53e062e8b3cd

This movie has the potential to make or break DC at this point. This is really their do or die film. Yes, Aquaman absolutely had a lot riding on it as well. Had that movie been a failure, it would’ve been disastrous for the DCEU. However, if they’re able to pull off SHAZAM! after the success of Aquaman, it demonstrates that Aquaman wasn’t a fluke (No, that’s not a lame pun). It shows that DC can consistently and reliably put out solid superhero films.

33dc9d50-ff04-47e2-9151-7bc7961d0934

If they somehow manage to pull another rabbit out of their ass and make SHAZAM! a success, it’s almost even more impressive because on the paper, both Aquaman and SHAZAM! are pretty fucking weird characters. Also, neither of them are very well known in mainstream pop culture. Based on this trailer, which is nothing mind blowing and that’s OK, I think they really need to nail the tone of this movie for it to work. If it’s too comedic and goofy it won’t work is a serious movie that has any real stakes. At the same time you want that sense of youthful fun and exuberance which comes with telling the Shazam story. It’s basically the superhero version of “Big”. Kid says the magic word “SHAZAM!” and he’s transformed into an adult superhero at will. His powers a magic based and they’re very similar to Superman’s, he can turn back into a kid at any time by repeating the magic word “SHAZAM!”. There’s no time limit. So they’re walking a really fine line here.

8c08f17d-dc9b-41f5-ad1d-4276c357f466

Like I said, based on the trailer, it’s hard to see if they’re pulling it off. But I know I’m rooting for this movie because I like the character, I like the cast, and I just want to see good DC movies. Hopefully this will be another solid film after last months very good Aquaman and we’ll start to get some consistently great DC movies. There are so many amazing character occupying this Universe, it would be such a shame to miss out on all the possibilities. Anyway check out the trailer below and let me know what you think. Id love to hear your thoughts in the comments section or on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks for reading have a great day!

After months of teasing, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has finally arrived. I’m so pleased to say that even after all of the excellent Spider-Man content we’ve been getting recently, this doesn’t look quite like any other Spider-Man movie we’ve see. Which is a tall order after Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

So, here’s something completely new for the Internet! A trailer breakdown for Spider-Man: Far From Home! What exactly is going on in this movie? When does this take place? How is Peter alive after the events of Infinity War?

What’s old Nick Fury up to?

PODCAST: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Review! (Some SPOILERS)

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

6DFAE82E-78AB-48AA-B22E-7F306878CB50

SpiderMan: Into The SpiderVerse has come along and done what so many people didn’t think was possible, the film yet again reinvents the superhero genre. For the past several years, a number of people in the industry, including individuals like Stephen Spielberg, called the comic book or superhero movie phenomena “a bubble” that will eventually burst like the Western, for example. They argued it’s a genre that will eventually no longer be relevant.

44D1AB65-C5D1-4628-9E73-7C2A81BB7A18

In my opinion, there are major flaws in this kind of thinking. First of all, the terms “comic book” and “superhero” are incorrectly, interchangeable used. Comic Books aren’t a genre, they’re a medium. Just like film, television, or prose literature. While superheroes are certainly the most recognizable type of comic book storytelling by far, comics tell a vast array of stories in dozens of different genres. Comic books and Graphic Novels tell hard boiled mysteries, fantasy sagas, countless sub-genres of science-fiction, coming-of-age romance stories, World War II memoirs, and many others. Comic books, like film and prose tell incredible tales in every genre. So, my point is, to say that there is some kind of “bubble” that will eventually burst, not only misunderstands the current business landscape in Hollywood, it also fundamentally misunderstands what comic books and superheroes stories are.

What’s so brilliant, what’s so genius about Into The SpiderVerse is that it is a superhero film that truly reinvents the genre. Just when the critics thought there was no longer anything unique, compelling, or wildly original to find in a superhero film, here comes SpiderMan: Into The SpiderVerse. Without a doubt the biggest thrill ride you will have at the movies all year.

647EA5A9-AA41-47AC-AF6D-68C247519700

I know these are very bold statements, especially coming from me. After all, this is the same year that saw the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which is certainly up there vying for the top spot of my favorite MCU film. However, I feel to compare Infinity War and  Into The SpiderVerse is missing the point. These are very different movies, trying to do very different things for their audience. What’s so wonderful is that we can get two completely different superhero epics that are both game changers for the genre. They’re both brilliant pieces of entertainment, yet they’re nothing alike. I feel wonderfully grateful that in addition to several of the other very good superhero movies we saw this year, we get two genre redefining superhero film masterpieces that don’t feel like more of the same.

Now, onto the podcast!

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally here to give my two cents on the terrifying, the terrible, the AMAAAAAAZING SPIDERMAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE!!!!! Even though it’s been out for a hot minuet, I still wanted to do an in-depth recap and review of what may be one of the best superhero movies ever made. Period. That’s some pretty high praise. There are SOME spoilers here, so proceed with caution, but this is NOT a full SPOILER-FILLED extravaganza. Also, I take some time to discuss the recent Arrowverse Crossover, Elseworlds! How does it rank among the other crossovers? Where is the Arrowverse heading from here? All this and more! Enjoy! Listen here or subscribe on Stitcher and iTunes:

First Trailer For New HELLBOY Movie!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

611E124E-E70C-4384-B186-0878539A05E0

One of the great tragedies of the film world is that we’ll never get to see the completion of Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman’s Hellboy Trilogy. Like RDJ as Iron Man, Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Ron Perlman simply IS Hellboy. He’s synonymous to the character. As much as we’d love to see the end of his and Del Toro’s epic tale, I’d rather have a new interpretation of Hellboy on the big screen that no Hellboy at all.

97FAB393-B3D2-48B3-B2F9-721A644AE669

If you’re going to follow up an act like Guillermo Del Toro, you better have something good up your sleeve. What I love about everything that I’ve seen from this new Hellboy film, is that it seems like the filmmakers are blazing their own trail. They have a brand new TAKE that’s all their own. This isn’t a watered down version of Del Toro’s Hellboy. These new filmmakers realized that if they’re going to pick up the Hellboy torch, they better swing for the fences (to mix a few metaphors).

9C6833FE-B5E5-417B-95F3-691BC4760D25

First of all, the folks behind this movie are going for a hard-R. Which makes sense considering director Neil Marshall is at the helm. He’s not know to pull punches with gore and brutality. In addition to cult classic feature films such as Dog Soldiers and The Descent, he’s directed two of the absolute best episodes of Game of Thrones: Blackwater and The Watchers on The Wall. With episodes of Constantine, Hannibal, and Westworld under his belt as well, it’s clear that Neil Marshall is the right man to bring a darker, bloodier Hellboy tale to the big screen.

The cast is pretty damn good as well. If you can’t have Ron Perlman, David Harbour (Sheriff Hopper from Strangers Things) is an inspired choice for Hellboy. He perfectly captures the mix of hero, outcast, and everyman that makes the character so endearing. I can’t think of a better choice for the role.

C503EE49-D8A0-4899-8331-0490751026FC

Rounding out the cast are some new faces in familiar roles and some really fucking cool characters from the comics who are making their live action debut in this movie. The great Ian McShane plays Hellboy’s adopted father and the head of the B.P.R.D., Prof. Bruttenholm (Pronounced “Broom”). Daniel Dae Kim is new to the franchise as fan favorite B.P.R.D. member Ben Daimio, a decorated soldier who died in battle and inexplicably came back from the dead immediately before his autopsy. In the Bad Guy department, Milla Jovavitch plays the villain, classic Hellboy Big Bad, Nimue The Blood Queen.

1A148304-5979-4DE0-BA27-3065A614AEB3

What’s so cool about this trailer if you’re a Hellboy fan, is how much of it is straight out of the comics. A bunch of the monsters you see Hellboy fight and a lot of the imagery from the trailer are straight out of the comic book. Specifically stories like “The Wild Hunt” that delt directly with Arthurian legend (I’m pretty sure The Sword In The Stone itself makes a cameo in this trailer). This movie was already a must watch for me, but after watching this trailer it’s easily rocketed to one of my most anticipated films of 2019.

Check out the trailer here:

Thanks!

The second trailer for Captain Marvel dropped today (meanwhile those sons of bitches over at Marvel keep cock teasing us with the Avengers 4 trailer)! It looks pretty darn good, if I do say so myself! This looks like it’s going to be a fun space adventure, leading up to the epic finale of Avengers 4.

NEW TRAILER: Young Justice: Outsiders!

The long awaited 3rd Season of Young Justice premieres on 1/4/19 on the DC UNIVERSE streaming service. Check out the new trailer for Young Justice: Outsiders right here!

NYCC 2018! Trailers Galore!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

This weekend was the New York Comic-Con. Probably the second largest Comic-Con in the world after the San Diego Comic-Con. Much like SDCC, this Con premiered some very cool trailers. Though there were a few interesting movie trailers, most of the big trailers for NYCC were for shows on TV or streaming services. Below I’ve rounded up all of my favorites so you don’t have to go looking yourself! It’s your best stop for all the coolest trailers! Enjoy!

Good Omens (Amazon Prime)

A3100705-80EB-4950-9EEC-814DBE5EB911

This one caught me by surprise and is probably my favorite trailer of the Con. Good Omens was a fantasy/comedy novel written by Neil Gaiman (American Gods, The Sandman) and Terry Pratchett and published in 1990. For years people have tried turning the novel into a movie, most notably director Terry Gilliam. Television being what it is now, where it’s able to bring big screen production values, casting, and talent to long form story telling, Amazon Prime seems perfect for Good Omens. With a cast that includes Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Jon Hamm, Good Omens has just become one of my most anticipated television projects in 2019.

American Gods Season 2 (Starz)

264B4730-B147-402E-B200-1346A2399A96

Speaking of Neil Gaiman, we also got our first look at Season 2 of American Gods. Season 1 was pretty damn great, but by no means perfect. I’m a little concerned about some behind the scenes issues the show has had. They changed Showrunners between seasons, for example.  However, a lot of shows go through growing pains and this trailer looks like they’ve kicked things up a notch for Season 2. I definitely recommend checking out Season 1 if you haven’t already.

Daredevil Season 3 (Netflix)

E3094FB5-FB0E-4725-AC18-AB61CD779D9A

Now we’re talking! We have two trailers here. There have already been a few trailers for Daredevil Season 3, but this is the first real story trailer we’ve seen for this season. It looks to be largely borrowing from the graphic novels “Born Again” and “Guardian Devil”. However, the Showrunner has said that the season is its own unique tale while still borrowing elements from those classic stories.

29764610-8523-4061-B23C-29BB7A5DEA38

This is a quick character trailer focusing on Bullseye! I’ve been waiting since Season 1 for them to introduce this villain. Bullseye is probably Matt Murdock’s greatest rival besides Wilson Fisk. I can’t wait to see The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen face off against the Assassin Who Never Misses. October 19th can’t come soon enough.

The Boys (Amazon Prime)

52CA42AF-5564-4A38-820B-06AC90A926EE

E1D47601-162E-424C-AFA9-BB2F6DF274D9

The Boys is based on a comic book by writer Garth Ennis (the creator of Preacher) and artist Darick Robertson. It’s an extremely fucked up, but fantastic story about a group of CIA black ops psychos who “deal” with out of control superheroes. And when is say “deal” I mean brutally fucking kill. The cast is certainly good and it looks like Amazon Prime is really upping their game.

Aquaman

994ECC96-029C-4F3D-A691-2552E3C7F910

Finally, we have an extended look at Aquaman. I think this looks fantastic and I hope they knock it out of the park. I LOVE Black Manta’s costume and Aquaman’s more classic look that we see in the comics. James Wan is a spectacular and versatile director. This definitely has the potential to be something truly unique in the genre. Aquaman opens on 12/21.

Thanks for reading and watching!

TRAILER: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Fantastic Beasts 2)!

Hi everyone,

The final trailer for the second installment of Fantastic Beasts dropped about an hour ago, give it a watch and then scroll down to see what I thought about it:

The first thing that I want to talk about is Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne.  Newt was amazing in the first one, and I absolutely loved what he brought to the table, but there had been some rumors that he was going to be downplayed in this film due to audience response.  I’m glad to see that this trailer looks like that isn’t true.

landscape-1533660456-rev-1-fbcog-tsr-015-high-res-jpeg

Newt is a great protagonist because he’s so different from the archetypal male protagonists we’re used to in action films, unlike the universe’s namesake Harry Potter.  I mean, I love the original movies, but did you ever notice that Harry’s magical method is shouting his incantations and spells as loud as possible to make them as powerful as possible?  He’s a bit of a yeller.  Newt on the other hand is soft spoken, and it took people off guard, because they weren’t used to it, but it lent the series some real rounding out.  There’s a great video all about Newt and his ‘Fantastic Masculinity’ that I think is really eye opening, and interesting.

The-final-trailer-of-Fantastic-Animals-is-here-The-Crimes-of-Grindelwald

So that’s my first big take away, based on rumors and my own expectations.  The second is Grindelwald himself.  Now, I loved Colin Farrell in the first film, and I have to be completely honest, I was not happy to find out we were getting a Johnny Depp filled film in the sequel (and possible the three films after this).  I’m one of the many “Johnny Depp hasn’t been reined in enough” viewers, and was worried we’d get another ‘cartoon-y’ performance.  The trailer has a lot of Depp, and it appears as if he’s riding that same sweet spot of eccentric, but not too weird, that launched him into performances like Jack Sparrow.  So I remain cautiously optimistic.  The bleached white hair, and the accent aren’t a great sign, but he never fully crosses the goofy line.

The third part is Jude Law.  I think most Potter fans were excited to see him as Dumbledore when the first pictures were released. However, seeing him in action in this confirms for me that he’s going to be awesome.  I think Jude Law is great casting, but also they seem to have Dumbledore in a more youthful, but still Dumbledorian role, relegated to being the chess master in the background again.  I think too much Dumbledore could ruin the mystique, and so this is a great decision.

99cd6fd4-fantastic_beasts_2_trailer_2

With Dumbledore, many of the fans were nervous that he wasn’t going to be directly expressing his homosexuality in this film, and I don’t know how overt it will be in the film (I’m personally game for any level), but he does tell Newt, that he cannot be the main one to oppose Grindelwald, and there is a shot that seems to show Dumbledore sadly pining for his lost love.  I imagine this is included in the trailer to appease the nervous fans, and basically say “you may not see them making out, but Dumbledore loves Grindelwald.”  Which I personally think makes sense, because it seemed as if their love happened as children and it’s over at this point.

The last thing I want to touch upon, is that they’re bringing back the main cast from the first movie and I’m thrilled about it.  I loved the three supporting characters, and I really think they helped to flesh out the differences between the muggle and wizard worlds. While also differentiating Newt from Harry.

fantasticbeastsheader

I’ve been very excited about this film since I saw the first one, but today after watching this trailer I’m more excited than ever. This looks awesome to me.  Comment below and let us know what you think about the trailer, whether or not you’re psyched for the movie, and whatever else this trailer stirs up in you!
