PODCAST: Best TV Shows 2020!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

This episode of The World’s Best Podcast, features the final installment of our series of podcasts looking back at The Best & Worst of 2020! This week’s co-host Big Paul Sr. and I go over The Best TV Series of 2020! The Mandalorian! The Boys! Star Trek! What We Do In The Shadows! Just to name a few of our picks for the coolest shows of 2020!

In my opinion, 2019 was one of the best years of television that we’ve ever seen. It was a clear turning point for the medium, where TV could now stand toe-to-toe with Film, to tell the most compelling and beautiful stories on ANY screen. 2020 didn’t quite live up to 2019, but it was still a phenomenal year from A-List programming.

The End of An Era: Arrow & Supernatural Come To An End

After we recorded this episode, we realized we left out a few key, important shows. While we might record a follow up mini episode to talk about these shows further, I still wanted to include a special section here, acknowledging a few of these amazing television programs. Specially, Arrow and Supernatural, both of which ended their groundbreaking runs in 2020…

It’s the end of an era for two groundbreaking genre series… both Arrow and Supernatural came to an end in 2020. Both show’s helped The CW essentially rebrand itself. The CW was defined as network, by an audience made up of predominantly young women, featuring shows like Dawson’s Creek and other teen romance-dramas. Supernaturaland Arrow largely changed The CW’s identity. With the exception of the show’s handsome leading men, Supernatural was essentially a dark, weekly horror film. As the series grew and developed, it became more of a horror/fantasy/drama and and became The CW’s flagship show over it’s 15 season run. With a rabid and passionate fan base, Supernatural went on to be the longest running and one of the most beloved genre show of all time.

Then of course, there’s Arrow. A series that redefined superhero television as we know it. The dark and gritty Siri’s drew much more inspiration from DC’s other most popular billionaire vigilante, with this version of all over queen having much more in common with Batman than the Green Arrow of the comics. The first season in particular drew heavily from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, foregoing any of the more fantastical elements of the DC Universe in favor of a more grounded and realistic approach. Which seems almost comical in hindsight considering how the show through that philosophy out the window in Season 2. What began as a small vigilante story with nary a superpower in sight ended with a full blown adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths! The storytellers were nothing if not ambitious. Arrow went on to launch an entire interconnected universe of DC superhero shows, like The Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Legends of Tomorrow among others, in what would become known as The Arrowverse . Even though Arrow may have come to an end the universe that there is its name sake is continuing to grow, with the new series Superman & Lois premiering in February on The CW. None of that would have been possible if it wasn’t for Stephen Amell who played Oliver Queen, he grew as a performer and an actor significantly as the series developed, imbuing his Oliver Queen with enough gravitas to shoulder an entire interconnected universe. Without a doubt, Stephen Amell‘s portrayal of Green Arrow made him the leader of an entire multiverse of heroes.

PODCAST: The Boys Season 2 (Episodes 1-3) Review!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

On this episode of “The World’s Best Podcast”, we review Episodes 1-3 of The Boys: Season 2, now available on AmazonPrime! Episode 3 in particular was fantastic. However, I have one big problem with Season 2 that has nohing to do with the quality of the series itself. I really hate that, unlike Season 1, the first 3 episodes were uploaded at the same time and all subsequent episodes will be released weekly, on every Friday. This is clearly not an episodic show, it’s one big story. It’s easy to see from the pacing and storytelling, that the creators of the series didn’t construct the season for this format.

I understand why a younger streaming service like Disney+ would do something like this, but a large part of the appeal of Netflix and AmazonPrime, is that when they premiere one of their original shows, every episode is immediately available. When a series drops all of it’s episodes at the same time, viewers to have the opportunity to binge watch a show like this, however they want. You could binge it all in one sitting, over a weekend, or over a few weeks, whatever works for each subscriber. Personally, I love the binge watch format. For a “MUST WATCH” like The Boys, I’ll usually go through the whole season over the course of a weekend. If I didn’t love the show so much and had more self-control, I’d wait until the season was over and binge watch it when all the episodes are out. Hopefully, this isn’t a phenomenon that we’ll see adopted more frequently in the future.

New Trailer: The Boys Season 2!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

I was happy to see a new (and probably final) trailer for The Boys Season 2 pop up online today. There’s really not a whole lot to say about this one. I love everything I see in this trailer. Season One was among the best shows of 2019, in a very competitive year for fantastic television programming. They don’t need to sell me any more on this. September 4th can’t get here fast enough! Check out the new trailer below:

The Boys Season 2 premieres on Amazon Prime 9/4/2020

AWESOME NEW TRAILERS!: The Umbrella Academy 2 & The Boys Season 2!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

When I wrote an article about the 10 best TV shows of 2019, both The Boys and The Umbrella Academy were pretty damn high on the list. So, I’m very excited to see what each series has cooked up for Season 2. Their EXTREMELY different shows, but besides Watchmen, they are hands down the best superhero television series running right now. I’m psyched for both shows, but while I love the insanity of The Boys trailer, I think I like The Umbrella Academy trailer just a little bit more. Mostly because I have no fucking clue where The Umbrella Academy will take things in Season 2. Either way, I have a feeling that watching both of these new seasons is going to be a blast! Take a look at the trailers and some promo posters below…

THE BOYS Season 2! New Clips & Poster!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

If you’re a regular visitor to World’s Best Media then you may have heard me say that 2019 was the year of the television series, especially streaming series. With the exception of the once in a lifetime experience that was Avengers: Endgame, I would say that I enjoyed the content on TV far more than anything in theaters. The Umbrella Academy, Good Omens, The Mandalorian, Stranger Things 3, Watchmen, each of these were amazing shows in their own way. Watchmen was not only my personal favorite TV series of year I also think it was the best. It was an absolute masterpiece and it’s chilling how prescient the show ended up being with themes about policing and race being central to the show.

If it wasn’t for Watchmen, my number one series of 2019 would’ve been Amazon Prime’s The Boys. There were a lot of superhero television projects that came along last year, but most of them were so unique that it didn’t feel tired or overdone. The Boys, from showrunner Eric Kripke (the creator of Supernatural) based on the comic book created by Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson,   takes place in a world where superheroes exist, one team in particular called The Seven are analogs for the Justice League. Queen Maeve is their Wonder Woman, The Deep is their Aquaman, and so on. When the cameras are rolling there every bit of the heroes that the adoring public wants them to be, but behind the scenes they are depraved, cruel, sadistic, self-serving, and in some cases, insane.

The boys are a group of mercenaries loosely tied to the government led by a man named Billy Butcher, played pitch fucking perfectly by the amazing Karl Urban. it’s easy to forget how many amazing projects Karl Urban has been a part of, he’s been in Lord of the Rings, Dredd, the new Star Trek films, and he adds another fantastic character to his resume with The Boy’s.

After young man named Hugie loses his girlfriend when she’s accidentally and pointlessly killed by The Seven’s version of The Flash, Butcher approaches Hughie to see if he’s interested in a little revenge. It’s the job of Butcher and The Boys to handle things when one of these “supers” gets out of line. By “handle”, I mean either badly fucking them up or killing them in the most brutal way possible. The show is a brilliant commentary on celebrity culture, fame, power, and accountability. It’s strikes a brilliant tone with pitch black humor, but not at the expense of undermining the drama of the story.

Karl Urban’s Butcher is incredible, but it’s the character Homelander played by Antony Starr that really steals the show. This is the first role I’ve seen Starr in and he knocks it out of the fucking park. The “Evil Superman” troupe is fairly common, but it’s never been done as well as Antony Starr’s Homelander. Imagine a character whose façade is a combination of Captain America and Superman. He has the exact same powers as Superman and he is America’s most beloved superhero. But he’s also a complete and total psychopath. What makes him so chilling is how she never completely loses he’s smiling, a pleasant demeanor even when he’s doing something incredibly violent and horrific. He has no empathy whatsoever and his pleasant expression always hides a time bomb just below the surface that could go off at any time. He basically can do whatever he wants and there’s not much anyone can do to stop him. It’s Starr’s spectacular performance that makes Homelander so terrifying.

One of the new elements being brought into the show for Season 2 is the introduction of the newest member of The Seven: Storm Front. In the comic book that the series is based on, Storm Front is male and a Nazi, so they’ve changed her quite a bit for the show. From what I’ve heard she adds a really interesting dynamic to the team by directly challenging Homelander in a way that he’s not used to. With Homelander being vastly more powerful than the rest of The Seven, adding Storm Front makes this the first time that one of his teammates can match Homelander physically. He’s used to being able to intimidate his coworkers. They know not to fuck with him because of how insanely powerful Homelander is. Storm Front’s inclusion on The Seven completely changes the power dynamic and should be really interesting to watch. EW.com had the first look at Storm Front in photos posted below.

The show is ultimately a conflict between The Boys and The Seven so it will be really interesting to see what the hell they come up with to kill Homelander, because so far he doesn’t seem to have any physical weaknesses. Fortunately, Season 2 is on its way and Amazon Prime has released a few great promos to tease the upcoming season. Both clips serve to set up some major plot points that will be in play in Season 2. So if you were a fan of Season 1 and you’re curious about the direction the story might be going, these videos will give you some answers without spoiling anything. Also, let’s not forget Season 1, ended on one hell of a cliffhanger, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out as well. If you haven’t watched The Boys, yet I can’t recommend it enough. If you’re looking for something to watch for something new to watch, make sure you check out the first season on Amazon Prime. You can watch the two new clips from Season 2 right here:
