PODCAST: Movie News! Strangers Things SHAZAM! Supernatural, New Trailer, & More!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

This was a big week for film and television. There were some big announcements (good and bad), we got a few interesting interesting new trailers (Stranger Things Season 3 being my personal favorite) and reviews for some of the year’s most anticipated movies.

The biggest story of the week was probably the Disney/Fox merger. It’s official, the Disney/Fox merger has completed. What does that mean? Well, basically Disney now owns all of Fox’s entertainment intellectual property. The big thing most people have been focusing on, especially here at World’s Best Media is how this will affect Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fox had control of a lot of very cool characters from Marvel Comics most notably (and most excitingly) the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

The timing is perfect for the MCU. After Avengers: Endgame blows our collective minds, this Chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will come to a close and a new Chapter will begin. Marvel announced earlier this week that EVERYTHING in the MCU from Iron Man to Avengers: Endgame will be known as The Infinity Saga. I actually really like that they’ll be one name for this huge story instead of just Phases 1-3.

We don’t know much about the new direction the MCU will be taking except that it kicks off in Phase 4, which will begin with Spider-Man: Far From Home opening this July. Marvel Studios like to make big theatrical announcements about their upcoming films. Considering how secretive they have been about Avengers:Endgame. I imagine the events of the film will drastically alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a degree that they won’t be able to announce much without spoiling Endgame in someway. I expect we’ll see a big press conference/announcement from Kevin Fiege, the head of Marvel Studios. How long until we see X-Men and Fantastic Four characters in the MCU? Time will tell…

John Wick 3…. So fucking awesome!

In the meantime, check out this week’s episode of The World’s Best Podcast where I discuss all the big movie and TV that hit this week. In this episode I talk about Supernatural ending it’s run with next year’s Season 15, so here’s a link to an article I wrote about the series last year if you want to learn more about the series: https://best-media-world.com/2017/09/25/must-watch-supernatural/

The Past, Present, & Future Of The MCU…

Hi Everyone,

Paul here…

After seeing Captain Marvel last week and  with Avengers: Endgame only a little more than a month away, I thought  this would be a good time to reflect on the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Phase 4 officially begins with the Spider-Man: Far From Home, this is the most in the dark we’ve been about where the MCU is heading. There are some this I know I’d LOVE to see…

If there’s one image that perfectly captures of my excitement at the prospect of finally seeing X-Men and Fantastic Four in the MCU, it’s this:

Doctor Doom himself using his Iron Man-like technology and his mastery of the mystic arts to take on The Anti-God, The Devourer of Worlds…. GALACTUS!

I’ve always been more into the idea of Fantastic Four characters becoming part of the MCU than the X-Men. As you can see above, the character I’m really hoping will pop up is Victor Von Doom.

Usually before each new Phase of Marvel movies, they’ll host a big event where they unveil their upcoming films. However, due to the secrecy surrounding Avengers: Endgame, all we know are the release dates for the next several years of films, we just don’t know what movies they are. We can speculate, though.

Doctor Strange 2 directed by Scott Derrickson

Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2 have officially been announced with Ryan Coogler and Scott Derrickson respectively both returning to direct and continue the stories they started in their first films. Marvel still has a lot of release dates announced without movies attached. I’m certain they know exactly what will be released there and are probably working on those movies now, we just won’t know for sure what other characters we’ll see until they’re ready to make an announcement.

Black Panther 2 directed by Ryan Coogler

I’ve always described the MCU is a big TV series with Kevin Fiege as the show runner. So when I saw he put out this video talking about the past, present, and future of Marvel, I thought it was very interesting and I wanted to include it here. You get some nice insight into the thought process behind some of Marvel’s biggest decisions. Check it out:

I think we should expect to see some big announcements in May or June as Marvel begins to roll out thier slate of movies for Phase 4. All we know is that it’s going to be very different than what’s come before, which is very exciting. In the meantime, go check out Captain Marvel and come back here after to listen to our full SPOILER review on The World’s Best Podcast .

Some Thoughts On The New Trailers For DARK PHOENIX & HELLBOY…

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

F45C1053-F178-4E00-AE1D-96EAE694A429

I wanted to take a minute to talk about the new trailer that dropped for the latest X-Men film, Dark Phoenix. This is very likely the last incarnation of these characters we’ll see on the big screen, with the big Fox/Disney merger finalizing. Which means this is the last X-Men movie with this cast. Since X-Men: First Class (In my opinion, the best X-Men film, not counting Logan) the series was really about telling the story of Charles, Eric, Mystique, and to a lesser extent, Beast. Quick side note , Beast is probably one of my favorite Marvel characters and I’ve always liked Nicholas Hoult in the role. Unfortunately they never quite nailed Beast’s look. Don’t give me wrong, I actually think it has its moments where it looks pretty cool, but I think this is a character that requires either CGI or very elaborate Hellboy-esque make up effects. Anyway at least it’s a hell of a lot better than that God awful Kelsey Grammer Beast make up.

E0CBBA40-0141-47A7-93F1-BE3E98F45EE4

Back to Dark Phoenix, First Class was Magneto’s film, Days of Future Past was all about Charles, Apocalypse was… um… kind of Mystique? Or the new X-Men, like Jean and Cyclops… I guess? I feel like these movies work best when they have a clear, strong character to anchor the plot and story. The Dark Phoenix Saga is arguably one of the best X-Men stories of all time and don’t get me wrong, Jean is a great character to build a movie around and Sophie Turner is a great actress. But from what I hear, this movie is dog shit. For a while I really thought they were just going to release this thing on Netflix, if at all. I mean the trailer isn’t particularly bad, but this movie was supposed to come out over a year ago, that’s not a good sign. People who have supposedly seen the movie have reported that it is a absolute piece of shit.

What kills me even more is that what may turn out to be one of the shittiest X-Men movies is taking its visual cues from my all-time favorite X-Men run, Grant Morrison‘s New X-Men. All of the costumes, from the X-Men uniforms, even how Charles is dressed, is straight out of that whole run. They cast aside the whole spandex superhero look for some thing that took what they tried to do in the first X-Men film, mix it up with The Matrix, throw all that into a blender and you end up with a really cool, unique uniform instead of a “costume”.

39EA7265-625F-477F-9CB3-5D0AAEFFE6B6
I love how Jennifer Lawrence is so done with these movies that they pretty much show us she’s going to die IMMEDIATELY in the trailer.

I just hope they don’t fuck up Jean’s connection to The Phoenix Force by pulling the same bullshit from X-Men: The Last Stand, where the Phoenix is some sort of dark, alternate personality of Jean’s. Just make it the fucking Phoenix Force already! It’s a god like force from outer space for chrissake, embrace the material! Oh well, take a look at the trailer and judge for yourself. As another YouTuber put it in his breakdown video of this trailer, at this point I’m kind of just hoping for it to be entertaining. If it’s close to Apocalypse, which I know a lot of people hated, that will be good enough for me. Then we can move on to where Marvel’s Merry Mutants really belong… in the MCU!

A2C5C92D-1D15-48BF-B369-36AC7A319014

On the other hand we have this SICK red band trailer for Hellboy which is coming out in April. I’ve been 100% on board with this one for a while now. This trailer just makes me feel even better about it. I will always lament that we never got to see the end of the Ron Perlman and Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy trilogy. However, life moves on and this looks fucking great.

BA8A72B4-F575-45F6-9492-2A35FAFD84B8

I love David Harbour as Hellboy, I love that they’re using some new characters from the BPRD as part of the rich mythology of Hellboy’s world, and I love how it looks like they’re taking most of this story straight out of the comics. While the last two Hellboy films had been loyal to the Hellboy comics, the sequel in particular, was very much about using those pieces from the graphic novels to tell their own story. This seems to be more of an adaptation of some specific, great, epic Hellboy stories. To top it all off, this whole thing looks bad shit insane! Fucking sign me up! Check it out:

PODCAST: Comic Book Movies At The Oscars & More!

Hey Everyone,

Paul here…

5f3e6bc1-28ee-4db0-90e7-424aaa30b87d

I haven’t been a big fan of the Academy Awards for years now, but I must admit I was very excited when Black Panther received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. This is the first time a comic book film, a superhero film has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Even though I don’t consider the Oscars to be the standard by which excellence in film should necessarily be judged, it’s still a great feeling of validation to a lifelong comic book fan. Not to mention that it’s all too rare to see a big budget superhero film with a predominantly black cast that, as put so well by Marc Bernardin in his Entertainment Weekly cover story, Black Panther is a movie about celebrating “Excellence”. Which is all too rare. This movie’s cultural impact cannot be understated. Even putting all of that aside, Black Panther is just a great fucking movie that absolutely deserves this recognition.

So, With Black Panther nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, on this episode we wanted to acknowledge that historic accomplishment as well as talk about other comic book films that deserved Oscar noms. We also discuss some of the upcoming DC films, like Birds of Prey. To top it all off, we try to figure out (if you could pick ANY character from ANY comic book universe) who would have the best chance in a face off against Thanos with The Infinity Gauntlet! The second trailer for Captain Marvel dropped today (meanwhile those sons of bitches over at Marvel keep cock teasing us with the Avengers 4 trailer)! It looks pretty darn good, if I do say so myself! This looks like it’s going to be a fun space adventure, leading up to the epic finale of Avengers 4.

The MCU Needs It’s TV Characters To Start Appearing On The Big Screen

3C941225-501B-40DE-8B5A-984E46D288CD

I’ve been thinking a lot lately that the characters from the TV and Movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe need to crossover. It is long past time that the guys over at Marvel Studios, stop measuring each other’s dicks and get the heroes and characters from the Netflix shows to appear in the Marvel films.

E0B8D022-6B56-4E01-951A-842E332F7AF5

The head of Marvel’s film division is Kevin Fiege and all of the television and streaming content is overseen by Jeph Loeb. I have a lot of respect for Kevin Fiege. I think he’s the main reason the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the success that it has. He’s always believed that following the incredible stories and characters from the comics and translating that to film has been the key to their success. I’m paraphrasing, but I’ve heard him say that as he was coming up as a junior producer on other less successful Marvel films at other studios, he’d often wonder “Why don’t they just follow the comic book?”. It’s all right their on the page. MCU films aren’t shot for shot, panel for panel adaptations of the comics they’re based on. However they completely understand why something works in the comics and then adapt that to film in the way that makes the most sense. They get the core of the stories right by respecting the incredible stories from Marvel Comics. However, most importantly Marvel Studios understands the importance of character. Marvel has incredible characters and they’ve done an excellent job of translating that to film. Character, character, character: the secret to their success. Which Kevin Fiege understands perfectly.

E0E0FA12-BE02-4441-A141-EA69F9837FF5
Jeph Loeb on the other hand I have a less high opinion on. He’s written some great comics in the past, but over the last 20 years he can be described as a hack at best. I’ve never been comfortable with him being the final word on all things from Marvel’s television division. He seems to be arrogant and egotistical. Possibly worst of all he seems to think he’s smarter than he really is. The guy wrote Commando with Schwarzenegger, he’s not exactly Shakespeare. Obviously I have a bias here. I don’t like Jeph Loeb. So even though I’m not 100% sure, I suspect he’s the main barrier that separates Marvel TV and Marvel Film coming together. This isn’t just based on my opinion. Most articles discussing when and if MCU characters from TV will make it to the movies, make it seem as if the guys making the films are more open to the idea. The TV folks, usually producers, are the ones who tend to down play the chance of a crossover. But maybe I’m underestimating Mr. Loeb. I can only judge his very uneven track record.

5977522C-92E8-4819-A49C-FB0128886309
This is very cool, but not the real poster for Spider-Man Far From Home. Just a fantastic piece of fan art.

Marvel finally got SPIDER-MAN in their movies, they can get Daredevil into one of their flicks. Tony Stark is aware of Peter Parker’s relatively unremarkable burgeoning superhero career in Civil War, when Peter’s only had his powers for 6 months. The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen and the bulletproof Hero of Harlem are major news stories. There’s no way some one like Tony Stark, The Avengers, the people behind the Accords, and what’s left of SHIELD aren’t aware of these guys. Hell, New York City was in more danger in The Defenders than some of the threats in the big screen Marvel films. It would be really cool of The Avengers took notice of this.

3AFBBF36-65ED-49BC-A9BF-70C7E716E101
The hero from TV I really want to see on the big screen is Daredevil (THIS Daredevil, Charlie Cox). Specifically, I’d love to see him in Spider-Man: Far From Home. I like the idea that, like Tony Stark in the first film, Peter has a hero mentor in each of his films that teaches him something new about being a hero and growing up. Daredevil is the perfect character for the second film. In the comics he’s the character Peter associates with most besides Johnny Storm who’s more of a peer than someone Peter looks up to. Peter’s also seen enough and been through enough at this point that he’d be ready for the more mature lessons he’d undoubtedly learn from a darker, street level character like Matt Murdock. He’s more of Peter’s world than Tony was and Matt could open Peters eyes to some hard truths about the way the world works in a way that Tony couldn’t.
I really think that eventually Marvel will break down this barrier and we’ll see crossovers between TV and Film. They’ve said time and again that PHASE 4 is something completely new. What better way to send that message than break some of their old, stupid rules and put Daredevil in the next Spider-Man movie? Here’s hoping…

PODCAST: Jessica Jones Season 2 Review!

A6B4EC2D-0E52-4E7D-BBDE-C0A6C5BFE9D0

Hey, Everybody

It’s Paul

As you all know, I’m a MASSIVE fan of the Marvel Netflix show. I thought the first 2 seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones Season 1 were some of the best content the Marvel Cinematic Universe had put out, period. And that includes the movies. As much as they don’t intersect for some bizzare reason I consider these shows just as much a part of the MCU as the movies. By the time we’d watched all of Daredevil Season 1, we’d spent more time with Matt Murdock than Tony Stark, which is kind of crazy.

23E4FB72-514F-42C1-82DE-457682EC6707

Anyway despite the huge dip in the quality of the content Marvel Netflix had put out (Iron Fist, The Defenders), they seemed to be mounting a come back (The Punisher). So, I wasn’t quite as excited for Jessica Jones Season 2 as you may expect, but of course I love the character and was ready for the Netflix shows to take me back to their best days.

This takes place years after THE PULSE. It was a new series focusing on Jessica returning to P.I. work while still being a mother and wife. The series in ending soon because Jessica Jones’ creator, Brian Michael Bendis, has left Marvel to work exclusively for DC Comics. I cant wait to see what he does there, but right now he’s wrapping up all the Marvel books he’s still working on. So one other graphic novel collection of this Jessica Jones series is out nowJessica Jones Vol.2 The Secrets of Maria Hill, with an untitled Vol. 3 coming out over the next few months.
