TRAILER: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Fantastic Beasts 2)!

Hi everyone,

The final trailer for the second installment of Fantastic Beasts dropped about an hour ago, give it a watch and then scroll down to see what I thought about it:

The first thing that I want to talk about is Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne.  Newt was amazing in the first one, and I absolutely loved what he brought to the table, but there had been some rumors that he was going to be downplayed in this film due to audience response.  I’m glad to see that this trailer looks like that isn’t true.

Newt is a great protagonist because he’s so different from the archetypal male protagonists we’re used to in action films, unlike the universe’s namesake Harry Potter.  I mean, I love the original movies, but did you ever notice that Harry’s magical method is shouting his incantations and spells as loud as possible to make them as powerful as possible?  He’s a bit of a yeller.  Newt on the other hand is soft spoken, and it took people off guard, because they weren’t used to it, but it lent the series some real rounding out.  There’s a great video all about Newt and his ‘Fantastic Masculinity’ that I think is really eye opening, and interesting.

So that’s my first big take away, based on rumors and my own expectations.  The second is Grindelwald himself.  Now, I loved Colin Farrell in the first film, and I have to be completely honest, I was not happy to find out we were getting a Johnny Depp filled film in the sequel (and possible the three films after this).  I’m one of the many “Johnny Depp hasn’t been reined in enough” viewers, and was worried we’d get another ‘cartoon-y’ performance.  The trailer has a lot of Depp, and it appears as if he’s riding that same sweet spot of eccentric, but not too weird, that launched him into performances like Jack Sparrow.  So I remain cautiously optimistic.  The bleached white hair, and the accent aren’t a great sign, but he never fully crosses the goofy line.

The third part is Jude Law.  I think most Potter fans were excited to see him as Dumbledore when the first pictures were released. However, seeing him in action in this confirms for me that he’s going to be awesome.  I think Jude Law is great casting, but also they seem to have Dumbledore in a more youthful, but still Dumbledorian role, relegated to being the chess master in the background again.  I think too much Dumbledore could ruin the mystique, and so this is a great decision.

With Dumbledore, many of the fans were nervous that he wasn’t going to be directly expressing his homosexuality in this film, and I don’t know how overt it will be in the film (I’m personally game for any level), but he does tell Newt, that he cannot be the main one to oppose Grindelwald, and there is a shot that seems to show Dumbledore sadly pining for his lost love.  I imagine this is included in the trailer to appease the nervous fans, and basically say “you may not see them making out, but Dumbledore loves Grindelwald.”  Which I personally think makes sense, because it seemed as if their love happened as children and it’s over at this point.

The last thing I want to touch upon, is that they’re bringing back the main cast from the first movie and I’m thrilled about it.  I loved the three supporting characters, and I really think they helped to flesh out the differences between the muggle and wizard worlds. While also differentiating Newt from Harry.

I’ve been very excited about this film since I saw the first one, but today after watching this trailer I’m more excited than ever. This looks awesome to me.  Comment below and let us know what you think about the trailer, whether or not you’re psyched for the movie, and whatever else this trailer stirs up in you!

TRAILER: Creed II

Hey, Everybody

Paul here…

One of the reasons I was so excited for Black Panther earlier this year was because Ryan. Coogler was directing and Michael B. Jordan had a major roll. I’m a huge fan of both of these guys, but I’ve been following Micheal B. Jordan’s career since his days playing poor, doomed Wallace on The Wire.

When Creed was announced my first thought was that this was going to be one movie too many. Rocky Balboa had been such a perfect send off for the franchise, why ruin it with another cash grab? But then I heard Ryan Coogler was directing and Michael B. Jordan was starring in the film, with Stallone returning as his mentor. Now they had my attention. Coogler’s first film was the excellent and tragic Fruitvale Station (also with Jordan as the star). Maybe this was going to be something interesting after all?

When they finally dropped the first trailer, they had me hook, line, and sinker. It looked fucking incredible. Somehow the final film managed to deliver and then some. I shouldn’t say “somehow” because I think it was the talent of the people involved that made Creed such an excellent film. Creed is arguably on par with the first Rocky film as the best of the franchise and this is coming from a lifelong fan of the Rocky series. To put into context how much I loved Creed, the film premiered just about a month before Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens and Creed was still my favorite film of that year.

Again when I heard Creed II was in development I was nervous. Ryan Coogler wasn’t returning (the new film is directed by Steven Caple Jr.) and I loved Creed so much I didn’t want an inferior sequel. It has a few things going for it behind the scenes, Cheo Hodari Coker the showrunner behind Netflix’s Luke Cage wrote the screenplay, so that doesnt hurt. However, once again the got me with the trailer. BIG TIME. I had no idea what the plot of this new was. Once the trailer reveals where the story is going, I dare any lifelong fan of the Rocky franchise not to have big old grin on your face.

This has definitely jumped to the top of the list of my most anticipated films of 2018. Check out the trailer here and see for yourself:

Look pretty fucking awesome, huh?

TRAILER: Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse

It’s been a big Spider-Man week here at World’s Best Media. I wrote a pretty critical article of Peter Parker as a hero a few days ago, Mike just wrote an article about the Venom movie. Now we have this trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse. I think this looks amazing. Even though I just wrote an article shiting all over Peter Parker, I LOVE Miles Morales. The first teaser for this movie was cool, but after seeing this trailer, this movie is on my radar in a big way. Check it out:

Marvel dropped the new and final Avengers: Infinity War trailer on us before we all have our minds blown when the movie comes out on April 27! So, I decided to do a trailer commentary! Pointing out interesting things from the comics, making predictions, and just giving my thoughts on the awesomeness that is this trailer. I pause a few times throughout the trailer to explain some more in depth concepts. You can just listen to my commentary on it’s own, but I highly recommend pulling up the trailer and following along with me as I go through the trailer. Man, April 27 can’t get here soon enough! I know there’s a lot of hype and a lot og high expectations, but I’m going to play the optimist and say this one is gonna live up to the hype. I have the trailer posted below ans my commentary posted after that. I’d love some feedback, so feel free to comment.

By the way, where the hell is Hawkeye?!

TRAILER & POSTERS: The Incredibles 2

Hey everybody,

It’s Paul here and I’m very excited to write this article today.  For years, there were 3 classic movies that I absolutely loved which were in desperate need of sequels. The problem was, for many different reasons, that it seemed like these dream film sequels would never grace our movie theatre screens. Over the years, it seemed more and more unlikely I’d ever get to see follow ups to these amazing films, all I could do was dream about what might have been… Those 3 movies were: Big Trouble In Little China, Unbreakable, and The Incredibles.

Now I’m extremely pleased to say TWO of those 3 films will have sequels hitting theaters in the next 12 months! Sadly, it’s extremely unlikely we’ll ever get to a John Carpenter and Kurt Russell sequel Big Trouble In Little China. But last year we got Split directed by M. Night Shyamalan, which was a quasi-secret-sequel to his underrated masterpiece Unbreakable.  Next year we’ll be lucky enough to get a full blown, traditional sequel to Unbreakable that builds off the events of both Unbreakable and Split, called Glass (Like Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass, who’s returning as the character for this upcoming movie).

Finally, at long last, this summer sees the premiere of The Incredibles 2! Goddamn, it looks fantastic! Sure, we had a teaser. But this is the first trailer that gives us any kind of indication of where the story’s going. It looks like it’s picking up right where the last film left off. I hate puns, but dammit it looks… INCREDIBLE! The character animation is better than ever and I’m so happy to see The Parr Family and Frozone back in action.  Check out the trailer right here and below I’ve posted some great teaser posters for the movie. Enjoy!:

Looks like a blast, right?  To be honest I was a little worried about the idea that almost no time will be passing between the films. But I must say after seeing that trailer, my doubts have been put to rest. Brad Bird is a fantastic director and it’s so good to hear that Michael Giacchino score again.
